Owing to the dissatisfaction with whioh the appointment of Lord Northbrook as Secretary for India has been received by the Conservative party, that nobleman has withdrawn from the position.

The Marquis of Landsdown, who was offered the portfolio of Secretary for War, ha& declined the appointment, being unwilling to sever his connection with Canada.

The Right Hon. Edward Stanhope has accepted the portfolio of Secretary of State for War in the Salisbury Ministry.

The Standard of to-day states that Mr Gladstone is inclined to modify his Home Rule for Ireland scheme with a view u> conciliate tho Unionist- Liberals.

It is announced that Lord Cross has reconsidered his decision to resign, and has consented to retain the position of Secretary of State for India.

It is stated that Earl Carnarvon will succeed Mr Edward Stanhope as Secretary of State for the Colonies.

It is announced that Lord Salisbury will replace Earl Iddesleigh as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.

It has not yet been decided who succeeds Mr Edward Stanhope as Secretary of State for the Colonies. Earl Cadogan has been mentioned as likely to accept that portfolio.
