"Subscriber, Mosgiel. — Yes, for George Sewardran 200 yds in 19^sec at Baruet, Hertiordshire, on March 22, 1847, beating C Westhall by 2£yds. NOTES BY BEACON. A good deal of space is taken up this week with the report of the meetings of the Dunedin Jockey Club stowards in connection with the Warepa business; but this space will be anything but wasted, for it will show racing people and the public generally that the Dunedin Jockey Club at all events are not afraid to put their foot down firralj on an attempted swindle, and are also not afraid to do justice to both themselves and anyone against whom a charge of foul play may be brought by throwing their meetings open to the press. It is a pity that other clubs do not act in a similar manner, instead of holding hole-and-corner meetings, and thus securing the power of whitewashing delinquents towards whom they have a leaning. On this particularly unsavoury Warepa affair I need make no comment — the report speaks for itself. I may say, however, that the action of the stewards has met with universal commendation — except, of course, from the individuals particularly affected. The following nominations for the Otago Hunt Club steeplechases were made with the Dunedin Jockey Club on Saturday evening : — KENSINGTON HANDICAP FLAT RACE, Of 75sovs. One. mile and a-quarter. Nominations for the Alexandra Handicap, of 35sovs ; District Handicap, of 20sovs ; and Trotting Handicap, of 15sovs, close on September 7. Sydney training notes state that on a recent morning the New Zealand trotting horse Erin was one of the first to put in an appearance, getting through about six miles at a good sound pace, and as he cast the last mile behind him in 2,52, is a cut above the common. He is an irongrey cob, standing about 15 hands, of most compact build, and should be very hard to beat in the Grand Distance Handicap. At a recent meeting of the committee of the Timaru Racing Club a donation of £25 from a number of the licensed victuallers in Timaru was received, it being stipulated that the amount should form a stake of a race to be known as the Publicans' Handicap. The sum of £310 will be given in stakes at the spring meeting. The following are the nominations for the Geraldine Sires' Produce Stake of the present season : — Mr John G. With the forty-five acceptances received on Saturday the .value of the New Zealand Cup already amounts writes " Seuex " to £1135, and as there is still £17 of the sweepstake to be paid for each horse that continues the engagement there is every prospect of the race being a more •valuable one than in any previous year. The same writer has the following : The letter from the Committee of the C. J.C., in reference to the protest entered by the Lower Heathcote Club for jumping the latter's fixture on Boxingday, is naive and characteristic. The letter commences by observing that since the publication of the C.J.C. programme the Lower Heathcote Club have elected to race on one of the days selected by the C.J.C. for their Summer Meeting. A cool and refreshing observation, seeing that the Heathcote Club have elected to race on that day for several years past, They then go on to remind the Heathcote Club how they monopolise the racing season, holding six race meetings in the year, as against half that number of meetings held by the Metropolitan Club. The inference to be drawn from this statement, that the Heathcote Club race on more days than the C.J.C, is not founded on fact. The letter winds up by wishing the Heathcote Club every success during the coming season, and considering that the success of the Heathcote meeting must entail a proportionate loss to the C.J.C, it is a sweet and charitable sentiment, and one which will no doubt receive its reward hereafter, though not perhaps on Boxing Day. Tuesday morning, says an exchange, was the first for some days on which any work could be done on the Riccarton course. The tan gallop was closed, and the nags had to work on the inner circle of the course (inside the tan), where the going was by no means good, being false and rotten, but this was unavoidable with the weather we have been favoured with lately. Ray was the first to start, and sent Torrent and Thunderbolt four times round, or about two miles and a half, tbe pace being slow ; after which, Liverpool, Longwaist, and Disowned did five circuits at about the same speed. Tasman, Mr Drake's colt, and Tasmania worked on the same ground, but went no faster than Ray's lot. Argonaut was exercised gently. All Cutts' horses, Nelson, July, Maligner, Bronte, Red Rose filly, Cruchfield, and Lorraine, were out trotting about, but were not stripped. Butler sent Titbit, Artillery, Talebearer, and Faugh-a-ballagh several turns on the track. Northcote was taking things quietly. Mr Stead's horses were out, but did not appear on the course. Canard and Irish King were sent by Lunu several rounds the reverse way of the course. Kingask and Tres Sec also worked. Webb sent Ruby and the Lady ■ Florence colt twice round. Patrician, followed several lengths off by Leon, went three times round. Madonna and Mirella, of Milne's lot, had a half -speed gallop, and were followed by Fusilade and Rocket, who negociated four rounds together. A good many jumpers engaged at the Hunt Club meeting were doing more or less work. In the middle of the day Maxim and Securus, Artemis, Repose, Mazurka, Captain Wheeler, and Wakatipu did their exercise on the course. Enfilade, Engagement, and a half brother to Salvage, were also out, as was a brother to Ruby filly of Webb's. For my own part, I think it is a great pity that the rules could not be amended so as to recognise, instead of "the metropolitan club in each provincial district," certain stated clubs of good position. Take^the case at issue. The Wanganui club, for instance, is as large and important an organisation as either of the Wellington clubs. Why, then, should it not have the control of the meetings in the locality of Manawatu and Rangitikei? For the rest, the Island Bay Club is at present clearly the metropolitan club, sinco the W.R.C. has not acquiesced. The latter will do so, however, uireetly, no doubt, ; and the difficulty will arise again. If ib does, in the event of my sug-

gestion re the Wanganui club not being practicable, could not the Wellington clubs nominate a joint committee to act in these matters ? A Taranaki sporting man intends offering a prize, to be called "The Dauphin Stakes," to be run for at the Taranaki Jockey Club Anniversary meeting; the race to be open to Dauphin stock only. A Northern writer has the following : — The loss of their late hon. treasurer, Mr Burke, will be severely felt by the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, as he knew more about racing than here and there one. lam told he was the best handicapper in New Zealand,- bar none, and that his talents in that line have frequently seen the light under another person's signature.
