MANGANESE.
The Hon. Mr Larnach, in his Mines Statement, says that manganese to the value of £37,103 has been exported since 1853. As it apparently pays to mine, I shall give its reactions, which aro very decisive. It gives no powder on charcoal, as do the other three metals just described. But on fusing the crushed ore in the borax bead with the oxidising flame, a splendid amethyst colour is obtained. In the reducing flame this bead rapidly becomes colourless.
