NOTES BY BEACON.

A meeting of the stewards of the Dunedin Jockey Club was held at Philp's Hotel on Monday to further consider the protest by Mr G. Robertson against the handing over of the stakes for the hurdle race at the July meeting- to Mr F. 6. Parkes, owner of the horse nominated as Warepa. Mr Robertson gave in a written statement. Mr Parkes, who was examined at great length, stated that just before the race he bought the horse from Mr Mackenzie, jun., of Tapanui, the terms being £35 cash down and an additional £10 if the horse won the race, but he did not get a receipt for the money. With a view of proving that this horse, was one which Mr Mackenzie had some months previously bought at the Provincial saleyards, Mr Parkes called as witnesses Messrs T. Kett (of Tokomairiro), David Scott, hotelkeeper, S. Counter (bootmaker), and T. Cotton. The latter, who rode the horse mentioned as having been sold in the saleyards, said he thought Mr Bacon purchased it at the sale. This horse, he said, was ridden by him over hurdles in the saleyards, " but was not aflyer and the horse which won the hurdle race on the 31st July knew too much for a green 'un." The other witnesses mentioned stated they •were merely of opinion that the winner of the race in question was the horse purchased by Mr Mackenzie at the saleyards. Mr Parkes requested the stewards to spare no trouble in their investigation, at the same time observing that if he were wrong he would pay all the expense, but if he were right jthe club should pay it. The evidence, of which a verbatim note was taken at the instance of the' club, presents some extraordinary features, but its publication was deemed inadvisable in the meantime. The meeting was adjourned sine die, for the production of further evidence.

Trenton is in steady work at Randwick and is reported in the Sydney papers to be looking hearty and well. He is quoted at 100 to 6 for the Melbourne Cup in the Sydney papers, and at 100 to 5 in the Melbourne papers.

Pungawerewere's son Tranter is in demand for the Maribyrnong Plate at 1000 to 60.

A special meeting of the stewards of the Palmerston and Shag Valley Club was held on Monday, at which there were present Messrs R. Ewing, J. Arkle, R. Margrie, J. Paterson, J. Everest, W. Little W. Robertson, J. Jeffs and J. M'Lew. Mr J. Ewing, the president, who occupied the chair, explained that the meeting had been called to take into consideration the question of signing the race course lease, the president, vice-president and secretary having been empowered to sign the same on behalf of the club, but in doing which it appeared these men would become personally liable for the rent, and that they declined to do. After some discussion it vras resolved that a simple agreement between Mr M'Leod and the club, to be signed by the president, vice-president and treasurer for the time being, be drawn up, and that it be clearly understood that the above gentlemen's liability only extend for the term they hold effice, viz., one year, and that the rent be tendered to Mr M'Leod one month previous to the races, and that the agreement take the place of the motion regarding the lease and parties authorised to sign the same as passed at a meeting held on the 11th May.

At the annual meeting of the Oamaru Jockey Club the report showed the club was practically free of debt, as the liabilities amounted to only £18, against which £20 had to be collected in subscriptions, &c. The experiment of reducing the amount of member's subscription had proved most satisfactory, as the membership had doubled. During the year £904 was paid away in stakes, £110 to the racecourse trust, and £60 to pay off debts. The totnl receipts for the year amounted to £1205 6s 6d. The retiring committee recommended that the spring meeting stakes should not exceed £500 and the autumn meeting £600. The racecourse trustees reported that there remained a balance of £126 12s 7d on the 3rd May last, but it appears that £1400 is due on account of improvements. Some objecjection was taken to the action of the Dunedin Jockey Club in fixing the date of the anniversary race meeting on the day of the Oamaru meeting. The election of office-bearers resulted in Mr J. A. Button being elected president, Mr William Christie vice-president ; and Messrs J. Moss, Hamilton, Henderson, Macquarrie, Maude, Humphrey, Dalzell, Shalders, and Wise as a committee. At a meeting of the newly appointed committee, Mr Lintott was re-elected secretary, and Mr Hamilton was appointed handicapper. Sub-committees, stewards, &c, were also appointed. The committee recommended that the spring meeting should be held on November 2nd and 3rd (the same day as the Melbourne Cup, and seven days before the Christchurch November meeting). Also that the autumn meeting shall take place on March 23rd and 24th, the first day being the anniversary of the province of Otago. The man Patrick Kavanagh, who was charged at the Police Court a few days ago with passing aspurious sovereign at the totalisator during the recent races at the Forbury, has been committed for trial. He alleged that he received a oken for a_ sovereign as part payment of a totalisator dividend at the May races, and that he thought there was no dishonesty in attempting to pass it at the totalisator at these races. La Rose has" hardened to some extent since it has appeared that she is to be the sole representative of Mr Stephenson's stable, but beyond her there has been no run on any particular horse. The Dunedin Jockey Club have passed the programme of the Cromwell Jockey Club's spring meeting. The letter that has appeared in various papers, signed " W. Weston," with reference to the handicapping of Aroha for the Christchurch Hunt Club races having been brought under the notice of the stewards, they decided that they were thoroughly satisfied with the handicaps, and expressed their thorough confidence in their handicappers. Christchurch training notes of a recent morning state that Lochiel was going slow, and Sierra, Beresford, ami others of Mr Stead's did a moderate share of exercise. Bronte had three or four canters, the half - brother to Nelson being a quiet old-fashioned gentleman. Nelson was out, as were Stonyhurst and Maligner, from Cutts' stable. All Mr Robinsou's elder horses were on the ground, but Winchester and Thunderbolt, the latter being very gay, did nothing. Torrent, Longwaist, and Disowned moved along steadily. O'Brien's team did little or nothing, but Tasman was as fresh and full of play a< a two-year-old. The tracks are not in good going order, owing to the broken weather, and the work doing at present is hardly worth chronicling, though as soon as we get finer mornings some of the nags will be sent along smartly enough, if they are to fulfil spring engagements. The Foxton Racing Club have a balance of £58 to the good. The following are the nominations and entrances for the North Canterbury steeplechases. GKRAT NORTHTCR'-T STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP. The annual meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Olub was well attended. The new rules which were passed as racing rules are, I (" Hippo ") think, good, but some of the other rules relating to the management of business, &c., are not as good as they should be. One of the rules states that any person detected watching a trial may be warned off the course. Now, how is a person to know when a trial, is taking place, and if he happens to be on the course when one is taking place, what is he to do? Is he to run away, and shut his eyes ? I should propose that a large notice board should be put up in a conspicuous place, and that svhen a trial is going on notice should be stuck thereon, requesting all persons to shut their eyes as a trial is about to take place. The caretaker might also go round with a bell proclaiming the same in a loud voice. The rule does not Btate what constitutes the guilty action of watching; whether the party must be on the course or where. lam afraid the rules will require a lot of alteration before they become workable.

The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club have decided to increase their stakes this year from £5000 to £5560. • The autumn meeting will ast three days, and the programme will include the Burke Memorial Stakes, a handicap of £200, six furlongs. All hack and haok hurdle races have been abolished, and selling races substituted. The spring meeting has £1255 allotted to it, being aslightincrease on last year. The Maiden Hurdle Race has been raised from 50 to 70 soys. On the second day a Selling Handicap of 50 soys is introduced, the winner to be sold for 70 soys. The Spring Handicap has 300 soys added, and the Flying Handicap 125sovs. The Boxing Day meeting has 650 soys instead of £600 last year, a Two-year-old Plate of 70 soys taking the place of the Hack Hurole Race. The Autumn meeting is spread over three days with £2810 added money as against £2356 last year, and the entire programme is re-arranged, the principal alteration being the introduction of the Burke Memorial Stakes, a six furlong handicap of 200 soys., and a Provincial Handicap of 100 soys, distance ljmile. On the third day a Novel Handicap is added of 100 soys, 'winner to be sold

for the benefit of the club. The Steeplechase meeting remains as last year with the exception of a Selling Steeplechase of 50 soys, winner to be sold for 50 soys, taking the place of the Hack Steeplechase of 40 soys.

A new racing club was formed at Napier last week, called the Napier Park Racing Club, to hold meetings on the Napier Park ground, three miles from town. Fifty members have joined. The first race meeting will be held early in October. A grandstand capable 01 accomodating a 1000 people is in course of erection, and the racecourse has been laid out over a mile and a distance.

At the annual meeting of the Auckland Racing Club the report stated that during the year the club had disbursed in stakes £7997_, against £6092 for 1884-85. £560 was spent in improvements. The receipts for the summer meeting exceeded- the expenditure by £3 10s, and the receipts for the other meetings were in proportion ; £4964 was spent on the new grandstand, leaving a balance of £3000 still to pay, towards which £2200 was in hand. The report was adopted. Directions were given to the Committee to regulate the use^ of the totalisator at country meetings by insisting upon a certain proportion of added money, so as to put an end to merely " public-house meetings." The suggestion of the Auckland Racing Club in regard to a Champion Weight-for-age Race was again considered at the committee meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club on Monday, and a resolution passed that the C.J.C do not at present see their way to co-operate with the Northern Club, but suggest a meeting of delegates from the different clubs at the November meeting, when the matter could be fully discussed. "Senex " says it is sincerely to be hoped that the matter will not then be lost sight of. I hope so too, and that the result will be that the insane suggestion of such a race will be effectually stamped out. If New Zealand owners of horses want to win a Champion Race let them go in for the Australian event, over which they would secure ten times the glory and ten times the money without crippling any New Zealand club.

The following notes are from exchanges ; A prominent horse-owner made inquiries the other day, with a view of purchasing either the two-year-old half brother, Niagara, by Anteros, of Trenton, or his yearling f uil brother. He was prepared to pay handsomely for his fancy, but was staggered on learning that the pi ice put on the head of the two-year-old was £1500, while for the yearling the modest sum of £2000 was asked ! Under these circumstances, it is hardly strange that no deal was effected. . . . The contract for fencing round the course proper at Riccarton has been let and will be proceeded with as soon as the Hunt Club meeting is over. Some of the elder and more experienced jockeys object to the short distance (only Bft) between the posts of the fence, arguing, with a great show of reason, that, in case of an accident happening in a race, the sufferer is almost sure to be thrown against a post, and in any case that there is not sufficient room to roll away from coming horses. The Committee will take steps to have the fence made as safe and strong, and, at the same time, as little of a barricade as possible.
