A Gold Discovery m the Hampden District.

(Feom Our Own Coebespondent.) Oamaru, July 27. The Mail to-night states that gold m payable quantities has been discovered m the neighbourhood of Hampden, and states that it has the information from a tolerably reliable source. It adds : " The extent of the alluvial country is limited, though it is stated that if the auriferous country were thrown open a goodly number of men could make from 10s to 12s a day for some time to come. As, however, the land upon which the gold has been found is private property, the full extent of gold-bearing country cannot be ascertained. The land where the gold has been discovered is on the run of Mr Kitchener, and lies a short distance to the south-west or west-south-west of Hampden. Some little time since a meeting was held at Hampden m connection with the matter, and a committee was elected to take steps to get the ground m question declared a goldfi eld, but they do not seem to have taken any active step up to the present, and are waiting, we believe, to see whether the proposed new Mining Act will facilitate matters."
