TATTERSALLS CLUB RACES.

One of the best afternoon sports held for some time at Randwick came off on Saturday afternoon under the auspices of the T.R.C. The weather was delightful, the attendance good, and most of the events were " won by a nose." Mr Oliffe, a member of the Legislative Asbembly in Macquarie street, acted as a judge ; Mr W Gannon and Jimmy Ashworth officiated as starter and clerk of the course. The customary opening race of the day — the Hurdle Race — was won by Dr Cortis' horse, Confidence, 4 yrs, 9st 71b, by the Albury horse Glorious from a mare' by Snowden. This was his second attempt at hurdles, for I find him winning the Twowong Derby in March last. The two miles was covered in 4 mm. 55 sec. Among the prominent starters were : — Belle Brandon, Student, Echo, Uhlan, Rocket, Butcher Boy, and four others. Betting : sto 2 agst Confidence, 4to 1 Belle Brandon, and 6 to 1 Student. The second race being an important one, I will give it in full. My readers will be glad to hear that the New Zealand crack jockey, Derrett, received his first mount in the' Tramway Handicap, which he cleverly won from Prodigal. The way in which he brought his horse out from the ruck at the Leger stand proved that he was a horseman worthy of any country : — THE TRAMWAY HANDICAP, • . Of 150 soys. Three-quarters of a mile. After a long delay at the post, in which eleven false starts occurred, the word was given to a straggling start, Claudine being most favoured, attended by Espiegle, Marina, Uproarious, and Wanda ; but, after going a hundred yards, the labt-named wao driven to the front, and she lod

up the hill and past the sheds at a great pace, Recruit lying on her quarter, attended by Phaon, Minorah, Claudine, Sportsman, Prodigal, and Farewell, and the others tailing off considerably. As they stretched out for the home turn, Claudine and Morceau both headed Minorah, and after them could be seen Farewell (Derrett pulling double), followed by Prodigal, the remainder of the field being hopelessly in trouble. Within the rails Wanda cleared out from Recruit, and at the distance looked all over a winner, but both Fwewell and Prodigal made their runs a little further on, and the former staying longest got his head in front a few strides from home, and won very cleverly from Prodigal by half a length. Wanda was the same distance away third, and then came in order Recruit, Wing, Minorah, Clfludine, Morceau, Arista, Little Charlie, and Sportsman, Marina being last. Time, 1 mm. 15 sec. A field of 28 starters left the paddock for Tattersalls Two-year-old Stakes — the first of the season— of 200 soys; colts, 7st 101b ; fillies and geldings, 7st 81b. Half a mile. Mr William Forrester's bay colt Halcyon, by Epigram — Ada, ably ridden by Gough, after three false starts, got away second, which place he and Signorina (by Lecturer) maintained until the turn for home, when Halcyon challenged the son of Lecturer, and defeated him by two lengths, The Wreck, by Robinson Crusoe (a very appropriate name, considering that his sire was nearly wrecked in Jervis Bay),' gaining third honoursSuch sires as Grand Flaneur, Goldsborough, The Drummer, Rapid Bay, Wilberforce, Glorious, and Vespasian were represented in this race. The half mile was done in 50 sec. Happy Thought- was made a very warm favourite for the next event, but Billy Long, as usual, was about, and accepted all the 4's and s's to 1 he could get, and consequently (the gelding being "on the job") he pocketed a couple of thousand of the bookmakers' stuff. Take it all together, the public had a good day out on Saturday, and the last race of the day gave them a doing, for Comet was backed not only by his owner, but the public. The following are the particulars of the race :—: — THE LOFTUS HANDICAP, Of 150 soys. l£ mile. Mr W A Long's b g Comet, by The Drummer — Regalia, aged, TstlOlb ..." ... An indifferent start saw Sometime get badly away, while Happy Thought and The Broker jumped well off in front. Passing the tan crose* ing Recruit crawled up next to the rails, and going to the front at Cutts', piloted his field past the seven furlongs and along the far side, where he had drawn out three clear lengths, Pet Girl running next in order in front of Ener and the favourite, after them coming The Broker and Sometime heading the ruck. These positions remained unchanged all the way up the hill and past the sheds, but as they approached the three furlongs Pet Girl ran up to within a length of the leader, and Folly headed Ener ; and a little later on Comet's, colours could be seen waiting on the four leaders. After entering the straight Folly made her run, and Happy Thought also presented a bold front; but Colley, sitting down on Comet at the distancepost, settled his field when he liked, and won rather easily by two lengths. Happy Thought was second, just in front of Folly, and then came Recruit, Lennox, The Broker, Ellington, Pet Girl, Rapid, Wheel of Fortune, and Farewell, Clarendon whipping in. Time, 2 mm. 11£ sec.
