RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

THE EXHIBITION RACE MEETING. Wellington, September 6. The Exhibition meeting, which is the first held under the new organisation of the Island. Bay Racing Club wa6 held yesterday on the course at Island Bay. The day was fine, but rather windy, and the attendance was about 2000. During the afternoon his Excellency and party drove on to the course. The general arrangements of the meeting reflect little credit on the stewards, aud the duties of starter were carried out in a wretched manner, and at times Mr C. Hill was hooted for the way in which he despatched his fields. The following are the results: — HURDLE HANDICAP, Of 70 soys. Two miles. Mr II Redwood's Mainboom, lOsfc ... (Herd) 1 Mr F Gentry's Erebus, llsfc 121b ... (Gentry) 2 Mr B Blower's Loch Lomond, 9sfc ... (Bishop) 3 Totara, Ngata, Porotawa, King, Little Duke, and Havelock also ran. Mainboom was the favourite at 2 to 1 agst him, Erebis 4 to 1, and the others 6 to 1. A very uneven start was effected, from which Totara and Erebus took the lead, but at the back of the course Ngata rushed to the front, and led the field, the others being well together, except King, who made a mistake, and Little Duke, who was sadly tailing off. Passing the stand Ngata still led, with Porotawa second, and Mainboom and Erebus pulling double in close attendance. At the southern turn Ngata gave way to Porotawa, who led to the hurdle on the far side of the course, when Herd took the favourite up, and easily disposing of Porotawa, took the lead and won comfortably by two lengths. Erebus made a good effort to catch Mainboom, but the weight told, and Gentry could get no closer than two lengths. Loch Lomond was third. Time, 4mm 15 sec. Dividend £3 4s. EXHIBITION HANDICAP, Of 100 soys. One mile. Mr H Redwood's Clogs, 9st 41b ... (Chapman) I Mr A Young's The Poet, Bst 81b '... (Skinner) 3 Mr W Hutana's Rata, 6st ... Clogs was served up a hot favourite at 3 to 1, Talebearer and Pasha being at 4 to 1, and from 6 to 1 to 10 to 1 the others. Owing to the fractiousness of Gipsy the starter had a good deal of difficulty with the field, and at a time when Rata was. 100 yards in front of the field someone in the crowd called " Go away boys." This the lads did, and Rata finished first, with Bard second. Mr Hill gave it ano start, and after a few minutes delay the horses again faced the starter, and then 10 to 1 was offered against Clogs, who had never ran. prominently in the first race. Another bad start was made, and Pasha and Talebearer were ! seen leading the field at a rattling pace witbj Clogs lying in the ruck. At the back of the v course Rata was seen going up, and at the top' of the course .had assumed the lead, with Tale- , bearer and Pasha close at his heels, Clogs fourth,' | The Poet fifth. When fairly in the straight all- , the whips were out, and a grand struggle ensued from which Clogs came out suddenly, as did ,'The Poet and Rata, and when passing the (saddling paddock the race was confined to these' three, Clogs winning by half a length from The Poet, Rata being a good third. Dividend, £8 I 6s. • In the flack Hurdles Seagull beat eight 1 others. Dividend, £3 4s. ! SESSIONS HANDICAP, Of 70 soys. Three-quarters of a mile. This race needs but little description. From an indifferent start The Bard jumped away with ', the lead, aud was never caught, winning in a canter by two lengths from Clogs, Glaicks being ' a fair third. Dividend, £39. Time, 1 mm. 20 sec. The Tradesmen's Hurry Scurry was won by 1 Doncaster, who paid a dividend of £2 7s. i The Cavalry Race was won by A.G., paying a 1 dividend of £1 10s. , CONSOLATION HANDICAP. Pasha ... ... ... ... 1 . Life Buoy ... ... ... 2 i Rata "... ... ... ... 3 Talebearer, Dynamite, aaid Mignonette also 1 ran. i It was nearly dark before this race started. Mr Hill was again unsuccessful in getting the horses away together, Rata having fully 30 j yards the worst of it. A good race ensued 'between Pasha and Life Buoy, the former winning by a length. Dividend, £117s.
