NOTES BY BEACON.

The following entrances and acceptances were received on Saturday night for the Hunt Club races: — WELTER HANDICAP HURDLE RACE.

KENSINGTON HANDICAP.

MAIDEN STEEPLECHASE. sfc lb

THE SHORTS HANDICAP. si lb st 1b

TA.LLY-HO STEEPLECHASE.

Berrington ... 10 10 Bothwell ... 9 0 The above acceptances give every promise of a good meeting, very few horses having dropped out of the various events. The only good horse out of the Welter Handicap is Eavenswood, while Taiaroa and Captain Webster are the principal defaulters in the Kensington Handicap, and the only wonder is that they were ever entered for a race at this time of the year. Of the Hunt Cup horses Ormidale is the only name of importance that is missing, and there are plenty left in to furnish an interesting race. The Shorts Handicap has also filled well, Taiaroa, Captaip Webster, and Waternymph being the only Absentees ; while the Tally-Ho Steeplechase has such good horses left in as King Arthur, Moody, Glenara, Little John, Liuwoo,d, A &c;

The following handicaps have been issued for the Alexandra races: — ALEXANDBA HANDICAP. st lb sfc 1b :

proved to be a winning one. He rode Mr W. Spence's colt Farewell in the Tramway Handicap at the Sydney Tattersalls^ meeting on the 29th ult., and won in a field of 28 horses. His mount started at 10 to 1. The following weights have been declared for the Kurow races: — KUROW HANDICAP. sfc.lb. This is somewhat extraordinary, seeing that the Hon. W. Robinson had several engaged, but it is still more astonishing to find that the New Zealand sportsman has not nominated a single horse for any of the other events. The absence of Mr Robinson's name from the list has created surprise, for more than one of the string was doing well, and it was believed that some of them would have been started if only to get a line for the good things of the Victoria Racing Club. However, they have not been even entered, and this action on the part of their owner has caused considerable regret, i'or it was hoped that good horses like Vanguard and Thunderbolt would have helped to popularise the meeting by measuring strides with Reginald, Uralla, and Co.

The Hon. W. Robinson has accepted for the Caulfield Cup with Vanguard, Liverpool, and Winchester. He has scratched Thunderbolt and Oudeis for that event.

Arrangements have been concluded (says a Southern paper) for a match between those two well-known racehorses Spectator aud Cathedral, at Riverton, to come off before Ist November next. Articles have been signed and the money staked, so that business is meant. The distance is to be two miles, lOst up. Spectator concedes 2st, and the stakes are said to reach a sub"stantial sum.

Trenton was to leave for Melbourne, via Sydney, this week, Dan O'Brien having decided to go by the Northern route in the hope of meeting with better weather than if he went by way of the Bluff. Certainly if his Melbourne Cup candidate had gone by the latter route last weeK I would have given little for his chance of being landed alive, for we have had a long spell of sou-westerly gales, which would have played ■i up to an alarming extent with anything in the ' shape of a racehorse. 1 Several horses have been backed for the New Zealand Cup during the week, attention being first directed to Nelson and Wapiti, while Ike aud Captain Webster were a good deal run upon later on.

At last week's meeting of the Geraidine Racing Club Committee a letter was read from the Canterbury Jockey Club announcing the endorsement of the disqualification by the New Brighton Racing Club of Messrs M'Bratney and Wm. Kerr, and the horses Supplejack and Marshlaucl for two years from the Bth May last. The meeting endorsed the action of the above clubs. The chairman brought before the meeting that there were several owners of horses who had not paid their nominations and acceptances from the last autumn meeting, and after some discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr De Renzie, seconded by Mr R. Taylor — " That no steps be taken at present." The secretary informed the meeting that he had replied to Messrs Mason and Roberts' letter stating that the arrangements made with them in May last hold good for the season re the working of the totalisator.

Fresh scratchings for the Geraldine races are Lochiel, Princess, and Grand Duke.

The Timaru Herald states that a private match took place on the Timaru Racecourse on Friday afternoon between Mr Benzon's Robin Hood and Mr Miles' Uncle Henry. The distance was half-a-mile, and the race a flat one. A considerable amount of interest was taken in the race. Robin Hood was landed a winner by half-a-length.

Chokebore Lodge received two new inmates last_ week (writes "Senex"), Mr E. Cutts having undertaken the education of Perkin Warbeck 11, and Allabaeulia. The former is a four-year-old colt by Perkin Warbeck from the imported mare Miss Kate, and the latter a three-year-old filly, by Cadogan, from the same mare. Perkin is a good-looking colt, but when a two-year-old his near hind leg was severely injured in a barbed wire fence, and it is by no means certain that the injured limb will stand the necessary strain of preparation. The filly is sound and nicely shaped, but somewhat on the small side. Both colt and filly are closely inbred to Adventurer, the colt especially, both, sire and dam being got by that horse. The South Canterbury Hunt Club Steeplechases appear to have provided some excellent sport, and in one instance— the Ladies' Bracelet race— the comfortable dividend of £72 was paid over" the winner. Full details of the meeting will be found in this issue.

Ohoka-Eyreton races will be held on November 30, and over £200 will be given hi stakes thereat, the prizes including the Cup, of 65 soys ; Hurdle Race, of 25 soys ; Trotting Handicap, of 20 soys ; and Farmers' Plate, of 20 soys. Ihe annual races at Lake Tekapo will be held on October 14. Some interesting matches were run on tho limaru racecourse on Monday. The first was a half-mile flat race between Mr G. C. Miles' Uncle Henry aud Mr E. H. Benson's g ni Edelweiss, owners up, the former winning easily by a length. A scratch half-mile flat race.

for which there were six entries, followed, including Mr Cramond's Tommy, Mr Melton's Pills, Mr Agnew's Unit, Mr Jefferson's Mary Ann, and Mr Lukey's Fawn. A slashing race down the straight resulted in a victory by a head for Unit, ridden by Mr Benzon, Fawn second, Pills third.

At tho annual meeting of the Merton-Rangi-tikei Jockey Club the report stated that though the receipts had a little more than covered the expenditure the difference had only reduced the overdraft at the bank last year that from £107 to £102, and added to the liability for interest on the overdraft to date had reduced them to the same position as they were in last year. It was to be hoped, however, that every effort would be made to reduce the present overdraft during the current year. The indebtedness was really attributable to members not paying up their subscriptions, there being no less than 45 members who had not paid their subscription last year, and in many instances subscriptions had not been paid for some two years. Such being the case, the club had not been in a position to increase the stakes during the current year. It was decided to hold two days' races, as previously, on the Ist and 2nd of January. The programme of iast season was re-modelled, the Sapling Stakes being scratched out and the stakes distributed over the other events. It was decided to give the same amount in stakes as last year — viz., £730.

I have received from Mr W. Percival, secretary to the Auckland Racing Club, a programme in book form of that body's racing fixtures for the year. The dates of nominations and acceptance will receive notice in due course. Meantime, I may note that the book contains entries for future events, winners of former important races, and other information of interest.

Maud S a few weeks ago again lowered the best trotting record (her own) for a mile, covering the distance iv 2 mm. 8f sec.
