Supreme Court, Oamaru.

Oamartj, September 9. At the Supreme Court to-day Mr Justice Williams expressed doubt as to whether the evidence would support the verdict recorded against Alfred Lovegrove yesterday. The case was reserved for the Appeal Court, bail being allowed to the prisoner. In the case against the Pooles, indicted, as father and step-mother, for having neglected to supply a small boy with sufficient food and raiment, the jury acquitted the male prisoner, but found the female prisoner guilty. The evidence went to show that the male prisoner had supplied the household with ample food. His Honor deferred sentence until the next session, for consideration of a legal point raised by the prisoners' counsel. Bail was allowed.

Over 40 applications were received by the Taranald Education Board for the appointment of head-master at the Central School, New Plymouth. The greater portion of the applications came from the South Island. The following names were selected to, be forwarded to the School Committee for approval: — H. Dempsey, Ashburton; J. C. Adams, Riverton; and W. Menzies, Tapanui.

About 14 acres of the old Waimate Bush, belongjpg to Mr Hayes, were burned during Saturday's gale, but were of little value. His mill and several cottages only escaped by the wind changing. The police are proceeding against tw6 bbys fdr causing the fire.
