July IS, Road tfoKKS,— A poll of the ratepayers was taken on the 7th ittst. io allow the settlers an opportunity qf deciding whether the Road Board should borrow a sum of money from Government under the Roads and Bridges Act:, for metalling and forming a portion of the beach road- The following is the result :— Portobello : For, 8 ; against, 0. Broadbay : For, 8 ; against, 0. North East Harbour : For, 0 ; against, 0. The day* was wet and stormy, which will account in a measure for the apathy displayed Educational. — The Hooper's Inlet School Committee held a meeting on the 11th inst. Present : Messrs G. Clark (chairman), J. Muir, R. Variey, W. A. Wilson, and G. Geary. The Chairman reported having received the quarter's allowance, and stated that the attendance for the quarter showed an average of 30. Several accounts were passed for payment. The bad state of the chimney was again brought up, and th« committee thoroughly examined the structure, and came to the conclusion that, owing to the foundation being defective, the chimney had fallen away from the school building, and at present seemed engaged in a desperate attempt to form a big S. It was decided that the board be informed of the state it was in. It was also decided to make an effort to get the board to put the school glebe in decent order, it being estimated that about £5 would be sufficient for this purpose. The committee then adjourned until the second Saturday in October. The Weather.— During the past week we have had very bad weather. In the beginning of the week ifc-rained heavily, and it has been showery and cold since then. We cannot expect anything but bad weather for this month, and- as the month of June was exceptionally line we really have nothing to complain of.
