Political, — Since my last, Mr Henry Driver, replying to a request to contest the Bruce seat, states that he is unable, owing to business arrangements, to comply with the request. In consequence of this, Mr Donald Reid, one of Mr Driver's supporters, has publicly announced his intention of becoming a candidate. Mr James M'Donald, a former member, has been persuaded by his friends to again woo the electors of Bruce, and wili also enter the lists. MrW.Hutchinson is still in the district, itnd from the amount of support being promised him, lunderotand that he is likely to allow himself to be nominated. A requisition has been forwarded to Mr T. Bracken, but that gentleman has been compelled to decline the invitation, business matters interfering. Mr Darling, of Kaitangata, will not stand ; nor will Mr Dunlop, of Lovell's Flat, who has been mentioned as a probable candidate. The name ot the Hon. Thomas Dick has been circulated, but that gentleman's intentions towards the electorate are not known yet. Tho nomination of candidates has been fixed for July 28, and the poll, if necessary, will take place on August 5. Toko. Farmers' Club.— A meeting of the committee was lield on the evening of the lith to consider a protest lodged against three pri/etakcrs in the recent ploughing match. It was resolved to uphold the protest. Temperance. — The next temperance entertainment will be held in Milton on Friday. 24th inst., when the service of song " Given in Charge" will be rendered by the choir, under the leadership ot Mr C King. Parliamentary Union.— The last meeting of the Bruce Parliamentary Union was wholly occupied in discussing sevcial resolutions. The first, by Dr Reid — "That it is desirable that coroners appointed under the Act of 18i>7 should be duly qualified medical practitioners," was negatived on the voices, the remainder being e.xn ied.
