After a couple of breaks away, in which Criterion and Barnacles were most prominent, the flag fell to a good start. Tho line waa. soon broken, however, as \yhitelock caught hold of her bit in such sharp fashion that she quickly held a clear lead of Lyric, St. yinoeu't, and Corunna. These were' attended on the right by Communist, Criterion, and Burgundy, and in the centre by Royal Fern, Scot Free, and Pjzarro, while to the extreme left lay S.t. Blaise. The latter was included, with Bar* nacles, Prism, and Wild Thyme, amongst th§ rear rank, and he never looked dangerous. Blue Grass was also one of the first beaten, tnd, keeping up the high pressure down the" hill, Whitelock had increased her command to. half a dozeu lengths upon the completion oi half the journey. At this stage her* immediate attendants were Corunna, lyric, Sfc. Yin« cent, Communist, Royal Fern, and Borneo, and next to them lay Criterion, Scot Free, Pizarro, friem, and Barnacles, of whom the latter had considerably improved his position. Before entering the dip Corunna, St. Vincent, Royal Fern, and Borneo betrayed signß of distress, and, <»ith Communist drawing into second place, Scot Free, Lyric, Criterion, and Barnacles shook off Pizarro and Prism, and becamo their immediate ' attendants. This rank waa thinned below the distance by the retirement of Communist, and when Criterion went out in pursuit of Whitelock there was no necessity to search behind them for the winner*; , As they approached the'stand Wbi^eiock begaii I to feel the' effects' of her cutting-down exertions, and although Criterion wan now being* ridden bard, ho gradually caught her, and must have been nearly level less than a hundred yards from home ; but when White raised bin whip he instantly swerved to tho left, and although Btraightened again a few strides frond tho post, tHe mischief was done,' and ha lost the verdict by"a length.'
