Turquoise has been purchased by Mr J. Marshall for SOU guineas. Vanguard has been heavily backed during the week for the Dunedin Cup, commisaious being out in Dunedin, Chriatchurch, and Auckland. It ia stated that he was backed altogether to win £4000, but seeing that ail that could be got in Dunedin was £6CO, this can be taken for what it is worth. Ai any rate, he U first favourito, and the warm support accorded him has seat Wapiti back a bit. Lady Emma is also easy, would-ba backers not relishing tha idea of her going to Wellington, where sha has been .entered for eeveral raceu. Quotations are as under :•—

Mr W. L. Philp ban given the name of St. Andrew to his colt by Lo Loup out of Dolly Barwon, and that of Pareora to 'the colt's younger sister. On the 14th inst. a trotting match for £10 a aide took place at Lumsden, and was provocative of a good deal of excitement. It was between Mr Roberts' Grasshopper and a Clinton horse (belonging to Mr Brebnor) that won the trotting race at the recent meeting there. Tho race was a hollow affair. Grasshopper won with SOO yards to spare. Intelligence has been received in tt wn (*ays the Invercargill News) that George Robiwttou, the jockey, died suddenly on Sunday at Opbir, Vincent county. It appears that he had been undergoing severe trainiug, and after a hnid "sweat" he was suddenly seizad with an attack of inflammation of the bowels, dyirii? about 12 hours after the first signs were manifested. Ho was widely known, not only in lnveicargill, but in many other parts of Southland, enpe cially among sporting men, both as a jockey and, latterly, as the owner of several raeehoraos.

Robinson took part in tho rocent L-^ka County race 3, and bis riding of " Jack " (alias B/Bal Boy) iv the Maiden Plate came in fur much oJHimsnt. The looal paper uay3 :— ln our report of theL-ike Jockey Club races it was erroneously stated that the protest against Mr J. Weir's Jack (which ran second in the Maidsn Plat?) was withdrawn. The protest— which was basad on the grounds of the name of the horso being Rnal Boy — was cont-idered by tbe stewards on Friday last and' all >wed, and the horso was very properly difquaiified. The owner virtunlly confessed guilt by euler ing the same horse in tho Hack Selling li'ic* on the second day as " Jack, late Real Boy " It is also stated that the hurse had wen public money. According to report the rider, G-. Robinson, know some of tbpse faotß at Wet before tlw race, and also that a protest would be entered against the owiier taking the stakes — henue probably his deliberate pulling of the horse for nearly half of the race.

The Lake County Jockey Club, who nre in a very favourable tm:»icial pveuion yvti now, have vary commendabJy dpcided ti> nv.ko a much needed improvement to thft eour s e and to hold a Derby at th" next annual meo'ing. At the Mauiototo Jockey Club's races on Friday th 9 Hurdle Handicap of 20 soys was won by Mr Ind^r's Mabel (10.-t 6lb), beating: Mr Laverty's Peeping T<im (9st 12lb), r.be latter falling. Mr Brady's Archie beat five others for the Muiden Plate ot 20 soys. Tn thu J.C. Handicap c f 5)0 toys, Mr Crgans Voium Barwon (8 t 81b) easily defeated Mr Rpld'K Benedict (Bat), Mr Kennedy's Coburp (10.it lib), and Mr Dawson'f Amy (7s>t) 'J'he H wiv Scurry was takan by Mi M'AngbtnoV Flying Fish; and th« Disirict li^co cf 30 f.o\M by Benedick (8»t Glh). who Ivat Mr Lnvprtj's Veronica (7-f. slb), Mr S.^niui-i't Mountain Maid (B*fc 4lb), aad another Paepitur Tom eeourpd tbe Selling Race of 15 hovb, Coburtr the Consolation Stakes of 15 soys, and Arc'aie the Hosnit 1 Race.

The Heatbcoteli icing Club have dotormined to 6ee if an occasional Satur iay afternoon meeting can be got up oti their course. To that end they issued a programme about a week ago, and called for nominations for a meeting to be hell on January 24 Tho stakes are only worth £10 each, and the entries recaived are neither very numerou3 nor of a very high class. Racrfs will bo h«ld at Plurnption Paik on February 13, tbe Club giving £185 in Rr&kea, including the Cup Handicap of 45 povb. Hurdlf Handicap of 25 sovb, Trotting Handicap of 30 boys, and Stewards' Handicap of 30 soys.

A meeting of tha Wellington Jockey Club was held at the .Post-offioe Hotel last week, there bring 10 members present. Mr W. H. Levin, the president of the Club, occupied the chair, and staled that the meeting had been adjourned from November last, as it had been hoped that a scheme would have been worked out for the reconstifcution of the Jockey Club and tbe Island Bay Park Company on a patisfactory baßia, However, they had called tbe present meeting to elect office-bearers to hold office until after the Summer meeting, as he bslioved that the two bodies would then be reconstituted. Oq the motion of Mr Kember, it was resolved that the office bearers should be re-elected, with the excoption of some fjantlemen who did not wish to stand again or had left Wellington. The following were then elected : — President Mr W. H. Levin ; viceptesident, Dr Newman; judge, Captain Hume.

"Hipt'ona" writes : T am glad to hear that Mr W. P'jrcival's "efforts to provide a Dia- ' reseed «1 fiokeya' Fund in connection with the Auckland Kjclng Club is proving successful. A fen of one guinea each was levied against the different jockeys as they weighed out at the Hummer meeting, and a decent » mount has already been got tunreihwr — Mr W. Wallers disposed of 'he b;. y yearling colt by Piscatortud finin YtMprina, to Mr J. B. Morpeth t,his wnk '1 he price paid was 250 guineas.

Ti-p following is a copy of the letter seat-by Mr Pilbrow (the owner of Clarence) to the stewards of the A, 8.0. Tegarding the above race: 4> G.-ntlemen, -As tbe owner of Cla- , rence— the horp.e declared by the judge as first psiKt the post ye&terd*y for tbe Auckland Sfce^pkchaae, and coneutly weighed in by the clPik of the Hcalos 1 have the honour to bdDg under jour attention iha hardship inflicted npun myself by the decision arrived at by you lioelnriner it no race, and also *o direct attention ti> toe following facta having reforence thereto : — First, t hat the objiciion ray-ed against my horae being doclaiwl the winner was more techuico.l thau real ; that the proper distance was traversed ; that the taking of one particular tenca in leu of another, if a fault, was one for which in all equity and good conscience I, as the owner, should not be held rdHponmhle ; that, it was the result of lha action of the Club'u own officer (the clerk of the course), coupled with thu general defective «.rrarg9mentß made to ensure a safe and proper ruuning of the course at tho 'double' opposite the stand ; that it i« urgpd the Club nhould at least take some nbare of the responsi-, bility ; that T have had to destroy one of my horaes engaged in the running yesterday — viz , Barkary, and I am precluded starting Clarence to-day — the horee being unfit to run ; that having no desire to have recomise 1,0 any extreme measures, which might lay me open to misinterpretation, 1 trust the Club will take the equities of the present case into their careful consideration. — I am, &c, J. Pilbkow."

In connection with the Stf epleobase (writes " Phseton"), the money invssted in the totalisator on the race in which Clarence came in firat was relumed. Many persons no doubt destroyed their tickets wnen they saw the result of the race, and there is reason to beiieve that some enterprising individuals have been gathering up the fragments. Two lots of six each, psustpd together on paper, were presented and duly paid ; others that bad evidently been torn were also put in. On the matter being brought under the notice of the stewards, however, instructions were given not to pay any more torn tickets without careful inquiry. Henderson's Mill races will bo bold on March 17.
