Ball. — A more than usually successful ball was> held at Mr David Cowan's Meadowbank Estate on. Friday, the 15th inst. The ball was given by tha Misses Corsan and Mr Thomas Corean, and between forty-five and fifty coup)c3 met to " chase tho glowiug hours with Syiog feet." The ball-room— the barn — press u ted a very charming scene, being decorated with appropriate mottces and devices. The walls of the barn were covered with snow-white calico, which, showing through the tastefully-arranged greenery among which several Chinese lanterns were partially concealed, had a very pretty effect indeed, The mo*toes were : at the bottom of the room tho woro\ " Welcome t " was nicely formed by an arrangement of leaves ; and at the top was an artistically-designed floral wreath, forming the words "Be Merry I " Dancing commenced about 9 o'clock, and from first to last all went " merry as a marriage bell." Several capital conga and recitations were given, as well as some step-dances, all of which contributed to tbe general enjoyment. Three hearty cheers were given for the entertainers of the evening. Mr William Pat era on, the M.C., also leceived a well-deserved compliment Tho young men and maidens than clasped hands, and sang a verse or two of "Auld Lang Syne." If the feellnga of thoso present ware analysed, would not the sentiments contained in the following lines be disclosed ?—? — There's sweet sorrow in .parting, but this lightens th' gloom :
To know .that kind memories round hearts will
entwine ; And, heartfelt the words, with clasped hands round the ball-room, We caroll'd the phoms of sweet "Auld Lang; Syne." Oh, dear auld lang syne 1 oh, how fond we revere thee, Aa such vanished scenes our fond memories recall ! A thought of that night will' the stronger endear thee— For who will forget soon the Meadowbank ball 1
