MACETOWN.

(PBOM ODR OWN GOKBBBPOHDHNT.) January 16. The Csmetet.— This reserve demands eomo attention all the bands of the residents It is unfenced and unsighWy, and not by any meanß a credit to the district. Xvvo interments have taken place in it ; one grave is fenced in with posts and rails and battens, while the other is unfenced. Since the Government 'have sold a number of towuship allotments one would naturally conclude that they ought to do something to this reserve. There are no relatives of the deceased persona now resident in thia country, so that there is really no one to make it his business unless the Progress Committee will take the matter up. Un/ortuuately, the proprietors of Maeetown quartz-mines do not reside at M&cotown, so that they are not comeatable for assistance in the matter; but for the credit of humanity the reserve ought to be fenced in by some one, and the Progress Commitfeee will deserve the thanks of the community if they succeed in getting It done. Handbook— lf I am nob much mistaken it was stated in toe Daily Times of a recent date that a handbook or guide to the Lake district had been issued, or was about to be issued. It will meet a decided and increasing want, in illustration of which the following case may be quoted:— A party vlsiud Maeetown a short time ago, who reported that in Answer to their inquiries at Queenotown as to the possibility of taking a buggy to Maeetown they were informed that it conld not bo done. Howevor, the information being doubted, fresh inquiries elicited the fact tii as there was no trouble in driving right through lo the reefs if one wished to do so. The case shows that Rome reliable guide is very much needed in this district now ; and the author who endeavours to meet the requirements of the case wilt deserve the thanks of tho community. Tbb Weather has been remarkably cold during the past week, and snow fell very low down the ranges, but the sun has come to the rescue, and the enow has disappeared. Ibis place, usually so healthy, has not kept its character so high this summer, there being at present no lobs than three men from here in tbe Arrow Hospital. Fortunately they are all reported to bo impro' ing. Mining Clabsbs —Professor Black is announced to open bis "testing laboratory classes" at Arrowtown on Monday, the 19th inst., for a term of a week. He is reported to have been well pleased with the results of his work nt SkiDpers Point There cannot be a doubt, that the Professor's c'nsses on the goldfiekls will he highly profitable to individuals and to the country, and according to reports from all sources a better or more acceptable gentleman than Professor Black could not be picked upon for tbe purpote. If he cannot reach Maeetown it is to be hoped the Macetoniaips will attend at Arrowtown.
