Educational Returns.
The attendance returns for the quarter ending Soptember, which were compiled by the Otago Education Board a few days ago, show that there were 164 schools in operation, employing 234 male aud 219 female teachers, besides 13 teachers of sewing.' The number ef pupils on the school rolls at the beginning of the quarter was 20,528, and at the end of the quarter 21,276, consisting of 11,014 boys and 10,262 girls. The average attendance for the quarter 'vas 8965 males and 8042 females, making a total of 17,007, being an increase of 579 in the average for the corresponding quarter of last year. The attendances at the Dunedin and suburban schools were : Normal, 713 ; George 'ftreet, 667 ; Albany street," 665 ; Arthur street, 659 ; Union street, 600 ; William street, 539 ; Oaversham, 526 ;. Forbury, 440 ; Mornington, 430 ; Macandrew road, 387 : Kaikorai, 343 ; North- East Valley, 297; Kensington, 289. A.t Oamaru the attendances were : North School, 340 ; South School, 827 ; and Distriot tfigh School, 249.
