Auckland, December 19. Seventeen Chinamen, recently employed a 9 firemen of the Triumph, left by the Ringarooma to-day for Sydney, en route for Hongkong, their passage-money having been paid thither by the local agents of Shaw, Savill, and Albion Co. Wanganci, December 19. The Rev. Father Moreau, who has been a priest of the Catholic Church in New Zealand for many years, and was formerly in charge of the Dunedin district, died here this morning, aged 71 years. He hu.d been up the river for a few months instituting a new church amongst the Maoris at a place called Jerusalem, and being ill came down to town, where, after lying in bed for a mouth, he succumbed to his ailment. The JSTew Zealand Shipping Company are advised by cable that the lonic reached Rio de Janeiro on the 15th and sailed on the 17th. Her passage from Lyctelton is the fastest on record, being only 21 days. Her frozen meat is reported as in prime condition. The ex-Mayor has telegraphed to Government the refusal of the unemployed to accept "so mean a pittance " as 4s Gd a day, weather permitting, and their determination "to use every lawful and constitutional means to shamo them into finding reasonable work at reasonable wages for the unemployed of Chriutchurch."
