Cruelty to Milch Cows & ShowS.

(TO THK EDITOE. | Sic, — As our agricultural exhibitions are jtißt at band, I should like to call the attention of the Society for the Prevention of j Cruelty to Animals to the fact that a great deal of cruelty is practised on one -class of ex- ■ hibits at the majority of the shows held in the country : I refer to cows in milk. It is well known that the milk is kept on many of these . .animals for an unconscionable length of time ' in order to show their vessels to advantage. ' .Now anyone who has had any experience with jjcows must have seen what uneasiness and pain

is caused by delaying milking for two or three hours beyond the usual period ; and if this_ is so with ordinary cows, what must it be with those whose secretions are unusually active, who are fed with rich and stimulating food, and whose milking is put off for perhaps 12 or 14 hours? It must be perfect agony. If there is one animal that deserves from man more kindly treatment than another that animal is the cow ; and if she has particularly good qualities, it is surely no reason why she should be subjected to particular suffering and cruelty. — I am, &c, Fabmhr.
