' .. .. .. 8 Thi« is a great surprise, the leading favourites when the last mail left being Galliard, Highland' Chief, Elzevir, and The Prince, while Ossian's name was net among the quotations at all. Qn turning back my files I find, that on June 28 Osßian found a backer, at the long odds of 100 to 1, and his supporter took the nice little bet of 2000 to 20. Altogether the result of the race seems to have been more unexpected than even Dutch Oven's victory last year, when Lord Falmouth's filly went down to the post with odds of 40 to. 1 against her. This is the. first of the classio races -that the Duke of Hamilton hag won.
Ossian was bred by hia owner, who purchased Mußio twelve years ago, and after getting two or three good racehorses (including Fiddler, who vvon the Metropolitan Stakes last year) from her, by different sires, put her, in 1879, to Salvator, who will be remembered as having won the French Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris for M. Lupin in 1875. Ossian ran but once as a two-year-old, namely, unplaced in the Goodwood Molecombe Stakes, of 1450 soys (Bst 101b), in which St Blaise (9at 31b) and Elzwir (Bst 101b) made a dead heat for first place. This Beaßon he ran second in the Newmarket Craven Stakes, won by Grandmaster ; third in the Payne Stakes, 1 won by Splendor, with Ladislas second ; third in the Epsom Grand Pri&e, won by Padlock, with Goldfield second ; second in the ABCot Prince of Wales Stakes (Bst 31b), won by Galliard (9st Üb) ; second in the Ascot Derby, won by Ladislas, with St Blaise third j second in 'the Goodwood Racing Stakes, won by Blue Grass ; won the Great Yorkshire Stakes, beating Chislehurst and four other*. Chißlehurst won last year the Manchester Whitsuntide Plate of 987 boys, beating twelve others, and the Newcastle ' Seaton Delaval Stakes of 485 soys frem six others. He suffered three defeats, the two most important of which were in the Doncaster Champagne Stakes of 1030 soys," and the Middle Park Plate of 3015 soys. In the former he ran third to Hauteur and Macheath at even weights ; in the latter he ran third to Macheath and Highland Chief, wheu he and the Chief were receiving 31bs from the winner. This year he rau, unplaced, in the Two Thousand Guineas, won by Galliard, Goldfield second, The Princo third ; won the Roui Memorial Stakes of 1000 soys ai Ascot, , , Highland Chief last yek'r teto Becond in the
Newmarket Stud Produce Stakes of' BlVthtg. won by Songless ; won the Exeter Stakey of 600 ssvs, beating six others ; third in the Triennial Produce Stakes, won by Rookeiy, with Adriana second ; second in the Middle Park Plate, won by Macheath'; won the Homebred Sweepstakes of 400 soys, beating' Fulmen; second in the Houghton' Stakes of 322 boys, won by Keir. This year he ran unplaced in the Two Thousand Guineas, and second in th» Derby, being beaten by St Blaise, in the latter race, by only half a head.
