interest which is taken In this column, the following solutions already received of this difficult problem ought to suffice It should also encourage our draughtplaying friunda to take fuller advantage ol the privileges of the wide and extensive circulation of tfctt Witness, to have their original games and problem* published. Colonial contributions are always welcome. We know of many who are in the habit of regularly solving our problems-, but who never forward their solutions, We would much rather they did so, as it is more encouraging to all concerned. We hope these suggestions will bear fruit. CorMct. solutions received from Hugh Montgomery, , Porto Chalmers ; C D, and W W, Balclutha,; A X, an* Novice, Invercargill ; A E Cameron, Ngapar*; James* T Turner, and David Watson, Waitabuna? In the game •• Cross," played between,, . Messrs Archibald and Boswell, of Christchurch, and published in our issue of the 7th inst., our esteemed correspondents, Mr Alexander Nelson and Mr J Bryce, of Loveli's FJafc, shew, we think, where Mr Boswell could have won, had he played for his 20th movo 2-7, instead of 0-25. Thus, 2-7, 27-31, 10-6, 1-10, 7-14, &c. They would like to see Mr Archibald play bo draw ifc after these moves are played. Mr R Forrest, of,Havelook, writes to the same effect, and states that Black should draw by playing 9-14 instead of 9-13. .' ' , James Darton, Lawrence. — Your notation is perfeotly correct. Dimedin Chess and Draughts Club. A meeting of the members took place on Monday night at the Coffee Palace, Mr David R. Hay, 1 president, in the chair. About SO gentlemen were present. It was unanimously resolved to meet for the -future twice a week, in adder's Central Cafe, Princes street Cutting, a very comfortable room well suited for tha accommodation of the Club having been secured for a year at a moderate rental. A large/attendance of members is specially requested for next Monday night, in the new premises, at half -past 7 o'clock, as the second night for the weekly meetings will, be fixed on that occasion, and the Committee are' anxious to meet the wishes of the majority of the, members, as well as those who may wish to join now that' there are: two nights for practice every week. We believe » good many would have joined the Club before,, but Monday nights did not suit them, and these' are specialty invited to attend next Monday, so that the Committee may know the most convenient night to fix upon. The handicaps of the 20 players who have entered for the tournament were posted up in the Club-room, and the general opinion is that the handicap committee have done their work very impartially. New members who may join on Monday night will ba in time to take part in this tournament. The Club continues to flourish.
