NOTES. (a) We are not absolutely coarinced that 11 P to X R 4 would be bad.

(6) Redolent of quiet elagance, and it j^Tes Black a slight advantage. For much to 1 come of it, however, risk must bo incurred, and this is not to be expected, for the parties have a profound respect for earh other. (c) Xt takes Xt P would be met by R to R 3, and White would soon get into difficulties.

(d) Probably necessary a s he cannot obtain posjeE'rion of the Queen's file.

(c) Both are afraid, and practically each play 3to draw. Dangers menace both, and from the other's danger each plucks the flower of safety. (f) An old-fashioned draw but it always pleasei. —Land and Water.
