NEW ZEALAND GRAND NATIONAL.

Timaru, May 24th. The following are the results of the Grand National meeting. The weather was dull, but there was a fair attendance. The racing, except for the Grand National, was very indifferent. The ground was very heavy. NKAV ZEALAND GRAND NATIONAL HANDICAP, Of 200 s'ivb, with a sweepitake of 5 »ovs e-ich for acceptors, to go to tlio second horae. Distance, about four m lea. Mr H C Adam's Kosciueko, by Blueboy, 6 yre, 10-t 51b .. .. (TSheeuan) 1 Mr H Lnnn'a Canard, 5 yrs, l - 2Ht Gib .. An even start was effected, all going off at a slow pace. Barbary led over tho. fiist jump, a double ; Qunmby coining up last baulked, but at the second attempt got over. All went nearly round (he course in good style, Barbary leading, followed by Kosciusko, Canard, Clarenco, and Quamby in this order. Coming to the double over the road out of the racecourse, Barbary baulked, and at the second trial foil, but was soon up and off again. Clarence jumped on the wrong side of the Hag and went no farther. Canard and Kosciusko went ahead together. In the next round at the same double Barbary again baulked, and was taken home, leaving only three in the race. These kept fairly well together in the lastround, the Hungarian having a slight lead of Canard, and Quamby about a chain in the rear. At one time Quamby looked like winning, but could not keep up his spurt. Kosciusko won by three lengths from Canard, who was about the same distance ahead of Quamby. The long race over the heavy ground told on the horses, who were covered with foam and mud on pulling up. There was no betting. There were 122 tickets on the inside totalisator, 14 being on the winner, tho dividend being £7 17s. On the outside totalisator there were 221 tickets, 27 being on tho winner ; dividend, £7 7s. The distance being two miles, a start was made at the north end of the course. All went off -at an easy pace, and the way was shown over the first jump by Master Morris, Commissioner next, and Captain a length or two behind. The first named two rose together at the next two jumps, and on taking tho double into tha road, Commissioner assumed the lead, the Captain in the meantime improving his position sblightly. No chango took place until the double iuto thn course was reached, when Commissioner fell on to the road, giving his rider (Ohas. Joyce) a good shaking, and he did not persevere with

him further. The other two in the meantime hsvd raced on, and on taking the. park puling fence, -at the north end of the course, Master Morris fell. Hedge had him soon on hid feet again, but it was of no use, as the Captain, who had taken the jumps in splendid style, won easily in a cantor. At one time the race promised to be a very exciting one, but Commissioner and Master Morris' falls damped all ardour, and the finish of Lho race was a very hollow one. The small field of two faced Mr Orbdl to contest this, one of the principal races of the day. Coming to the tirst double into the road Waverley baulked, but his rider putting him again at it got him over into the road and into the paddock, and sent him along after Clarence, who was taking things very coolly. The double into the course and the paling fence were then safely got over by both horses, and on coining up to the gorse Waveiley was again alongside Clarence's girths. They ro&e almost together to the timber jumps, the gorse, and the stone wall opposite the judge's box. After getting over the wall Waverley ran inside, and in jumping the double — the place where he first refused — he got on the wrong side of the flag. Luna then took things quietly and won almost in a walk. Waverley came in about half a mile behiud Clarence. Clarence went very well from start to finish, taking all his jumps in fine style, and being well ridden by Lunu. Totalisators :14 in inside, 10 being on the winner. After getting over the stone wall, Waverley bolted, and was not again in the race. The two left in then went at it, and jumped well until the paling fence was reached, when Quamby, much to the surprise of the spectators, baulked again and again, and had to be brought home.
