London, April 24th. The cargo of frozen mutton ex steamship Chimborazo was frozen too hastily before shipmont, and has arrived partly in bad condition. Inferior mutton has sold at 2d and good at 6d per Ib. The Cabinet have decided that 1500 men shall be sent to reinforce the naval squadron which has proceeded to Tonquin in view of the outbreak of hostilities between France and Anam.

Consols have declined to 102£, New Zealand securities remain at yesterday's, quotations. Adelaide wheat is unchanged— soa ex store ; and New Zealand ditto, 45s to 49^. Adelaide flour ex store, 34s 6d. Australian tallow— best beef, 4-is ; best mutton, 495. The Homeward mails via Suez and Brindisi, which left Melbourne on the loth March, were delivered here to-day.

April 25th. In the House of Lords to-day Earl Derby, Secretary for the Colonies, made a statement to the effect that the Government had received reassuring intelligence as to the policy of the Boer Government. The Imperial Government would, after inquiry, be prepared to grant some modifications of the terms of the convention of July, 1881, under which the Transvaal was retroceded to the Boers.

The Prince of Wales has paid a visit to the White Star liner lonic, Captain Sakee, which has been chartered by the New Zealand Ship ping Company for the direct steam service to New Zealand. His Royal Highness expressed admiration at the class of vessel and the arrangements made for the comfort and safety of passengers. He also evinced great interest in the extension and improvement of the refrigerating machinery which is being erected on board of her. Mr Jernay (manager of the White Star line), Mr J. L. Coster, of Christchurch (chairman of the New Zealand Shipping Company), Mr 0. R. Strickland (manager of the Company in London), and Mr Falconer Larkworthy (director in London) were presented to the Prince of Wales, who displayed much interest in the welfare of New Zealand, and wished every success to the direct steam service to the Colony.
