SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS OF OTAGO.

The ordinary meeting of the School Commissioners of Otago was held on Tuesday, there being present : J. P. Maitland, Esq., Hon. Dr Menzies, Hon. W. H. Reynolds, A. C. Be<?g> Esq., and W. H. Pearson, Esq.

On the minutes of the previous meeting being read, the following resolution, passed at a meeting held on the 10th inßt., was referred to : — " Resolved, that the Commissioners reconsider, at the reqiiest of the Government, the question of dealing with 20,000 acres of surveyed blocks at Waikaia, and now recommend that one-third of the land be proclaimed open on perpetual leasing under the provisions of section 50, 'Land Act, 1877, Amendment Act, 1882 ' the remaining two-thirds to be proclaimed under section 53 of the same Act, with a view to its being offered for sale in equal proportions on cash and deferred payments ; the sections to be alternated." It was explained that the Government agreed to, this recommendation, and The following additional resolution was now added to the above minute *• — " The foregoing resolution was passed at the uigent request of the Government, and in consequence of their threat that unless this was agreed to they would decline to open the land for settlement at all, the leasing system being in the opinion of a majority of the Commissioners an objectionable mode of dealing with the endowments." An application was made by the Otago Education Board for a share of the secondary reserve rents towards the assistance of the district high schools. — The application was granted. An application by J. C. Ellis to purchase sections 21 and 22, Waiau, under section 77 of the Land Act, was declined. The Waikaia Land and Progress Committee asked the Commissioners to have the sections in Waikaia sold at Lhat place. — It was resolved ,to hold the sale of cash sections at Gore.

J. S. Royds reported a sale of leases at Invercargiil on the 31st, the total annual rent being £122 12s. The report and balance-sheet for the year ending December 31st, 1882, were adopted. Accounts amounting to £69 5s were passed for payment.
