Mining at Wakatipu.
The Wakatipu Mail contains the following items :—: — " Mr F. Evans, manager of the Phoonix claim, Skippers, brought down on Mond-iy a 90-ouuce cake of gold, the result, we understand, of about. 180 tons of Btone crushed — Information was received in town a few days ago that four pounds weight of amalgam — after a week's crushing — had been lifted from the table of the Invincible Company's battery, Head of Lake. This, of course, is irre pective of the boxes, which are reasonably expected to contain a far larger proportion cf^the precious metal, and so far the results are very satisfactory It may be mentioned that the were lately dala\ ed considerably in crushing operations owing to the inferior quality of the stampers (10) which have since been shod with steel by Mr E. Aldridge, of this town.
