' , ( ; ", r , At present we are of course in the dark as jto whether [or not Bruce ran in the Derby, for which he was so strong a favourite ; but at'all } events he has redeemed his, early promise by carrying "off the great French race."' He was bred at Marden .Dear Park stud 'and'was sold for 1100 guineas as a yearling. 1 'Last season he ran four times and won on every occasion. His dibut was at Ascot, where he started the rankest outsider for the Windsor Castle Stakes of 600 soys, but won cleverly. AtEgham.he won the King' John Stakes of 446 soys, 'at Doncaster won the Rous Plate of 397 soya, and at Newmarket Houghton won the Criterion Stakes of 1127 soys. In this race he beat Nellie, St. Marguerite, arid five others easily, though running wide at the finish. When he won his first race Bell's Life said : — "A finer-shaped two-year-old,' , or one' with more promise as regards the future, has not carried a racing jacket this season, and although fine feathers do not always make fine birds, Bruce should turn out worth every shilling of the 1100 guineas he cost last year- at the sale of the Marden Dear Park yearlings." He is out of the same dam as Brown Bess (by Musket), who last year won the Great Metropolitan Stakes and the Goodwood Stakes Bruce is unfortunately not engaged in the St. Leger. Fen6lon last year ran unplaced in two, Nursery Handicaps at Newmarket. Alhambra did not run as a two-year-old. The only English horses of note, besides Bruce, that were entered for the Grand Prix were Marden, Agneta, Kingdom, and , Dunmore. The American owner, Mr Keene, ,who won last year with Foxhall, had four horses entered this season. PEDIGREE OF THE WINNER.
