Cricket.

Two centuries were made on Saturday in Christchurch, both by members of the Cotterill family. In the match Christ's College (past and present) v. the Association, the Collegians scored #93 for six wickets,, against the bowling of Fuller and others. E. J. Cotterill scored 117 (not out); and E. J. Ross 72 (also not-out). Another Christ's College eleven, (of youngsters), playing against a High School cloven, ran up a total of 278 ; C. Cotterill scoring 110. ,

Cricket (says the Lyttelton Times) will soon become as common a pastime in winter as in summer. In addition f tb the proposed pavilion for winter practice at Lancaster Park, jMr Lodge has commencedthe erection of a similar building' in Hereford "street, nekt' to Collins' Hotel. The structure ia to be wide enough to allow of two wickets being pitched, arid owing to its proximity to the centre of the town,' Mr Lodge should have plenty of patronage.; .A suggestion has been' made to import a professional, who should divide his time between) the 1 clubs playing 6n the'.turf'in the summer, land the frequenters' of ' these pavilion's' in [the 'winter. It certainly is worth while considering whether some -'arrangement cannot (be arrived at by which the 1 services of a professional could thus be secured. ~ '■ \ The weather was favourable for cricket' on Wafcurday, 'the > termination of the cricket season' lßßl-1882. A good many games 'were contested in < the city, but none of them were of any importance. The match between the Carjsbrook and- Dunedin Clubs was not 'continued. ,Tho. clubs concerned deemed it) advisable to allow ,the match to be drawn, as several of the players from both teams were I absent, and their places could not very .well be filled by substitutes. This, match being off,' several of the Dunedin . Club's Frst . Eleven I (among them Glen and Carr) turned up at; the Oval and took part in the match jthat was to have been, played against Sargood's Club. This of course caused a good .deal of grumbling, and j it certainly does not reflect great credit on the Match Committee when they allow such.things to take place. Altogether the past season must bo regarded as a very favourable one, for from Kits, commencement .up, to 'the^present time a very lively interest was taken in the game,' arid several important matches were played. Prominent among these ,were the English and Intorprovincial matches, the latter resulting in a decided victoiy for the local team. ,< All the principal clubs have' been making good progress. The members of the Cansbrook Club,- in particular, deserve credit for the energy they have displayed in the interest of cricket. They have floated a company in order to form a good ground, and have gone to great expense in the formation of one noar Caversham, which when completed will be the best cricket-field in or about Dunedin. ,The Dunedin Club has also done something towards providing a suitable ground, and for ! this purpose a considerable amount of money has been laid out in improving the Oval, which was last winter so much cut up by footballers. There will ; however, be no further trouble in this direction, and as an extra call was made on the members a few weeks ago, the Club ought to enter upon its next season in a flourishing condition. The clubs at the north end of the town have also done something in the way of providing a playable ground, and by their united efforts they havo erected a pavilion and effected other improvements on tho old Caledonian-ground.

The following are the results of Saturday' play :—

The match between the First Eleven of the Albions and Fifteen of tho Grange C.C. resulted in an easy victory for tho colts by 100 runs, tho scores being :— Albions, 38; Grange, 138. Clark was the only one of the Albions who made a stand against the bowling of A. and P. Turnbull, who bowled in grand style. The former took two wickets for IS runs, and the latter six for 17 runs. Haydon (IS), Grieve (IS), A. Turnbull (88), and W. Kndlay (14 not out) played well for tho Grange Club. The fielding of O. H. Haskell and the wicketkoeping of Glasgow, for the Albions, was very good. A match was played at Port Chalmers on Saturday between the Second Eleven Excelsior and an eleven of the local club, which resulted in a victory for tho Port Club, on the fir&t iuning-ti, by 10 runs. The scores were: b)xcdlsior, 31 and 41 ; Port Chalmoiy, 41. Tho bowling of Foster for the victord was very effective, he getting six wickets in the first inniugH, and 86 von in tho second. Sheppard also bowled well for the losers, obtaining eight wickets. 1

In tho match Carol v. Roslyn, tho former won by eight wickets and three runs— Roslyn, 9 and 28; Carol, 82 and 13 runs, for two wickets. Heffernan and West bowled well for the victors, as did Godfrey and Martin for the losers,

v The match between the Waverley and , the? Alberts resulted in a win for the latter by 1 one run. Owing to the bad wicket the scoring was not at all good. Aitchison ,with six' for, 'the Albert, and Arundoll with four for Waverley, were the respective top scorers. The scores were : Albert, 15 ; Waverley, 14. The match Carisbrook v. Albion Second Eleven was won by the former Club on the first innings by 15 runs. The attention of the Carisbrook Club is called to an advertisement in another column (regarding the removal of material, &c. from the Caledonian-ground. The match between First Elevens,, of ' the Excelsior and Kaikorai Clubs was played on Saturdayat the Oval,.and'resulted'"in*an easy victory for the former by 23 runs; the, scores being:'. Kaikorai,' 3s; -Excelsior, 58. t\ Miller "(13)' was top' 'scorer for ''the 'losers, 'and* Skitch (12) occupied the same position for the. victors. Cooper, for the Excelsiors, bowled with telling effect, taking three wickets withUfrree successive balls. . ( . A match was played on, the) Montecillo ground on Saturday last between' ,tlie, firms of Clark and Co. and Gibbs and.Co.,' timber, merchants, ending in a victory for the former firm \>y- 16 runs ; Olark and Co. making 98, Gibba and Co. 82.

An eleven from the Oarisbrook, Club' proceeded to Milton, where they contested a match with a country team constituted, as follows :— Taieri— Allan Ji and Reid.'. < .Lawrence — Downes, M'Carthy, and Hunter. Mount Stuart— Little D. and Little, A. Milton— Dewar, Grant, Dr Reid, and Macan, . ,The match was played in Draper's paddock, and as the wicket was very hard, big hits were, the order of the day. The country team' did not play well together, and their .fielding was rather loose. Downea came off welLin the bowling, and Allan was also in .'good form. The country team went first to the wickets, and were all disposed of for 73 runs. The Oari3brook men made 116. In 'their second innings the country players put together 59, and the visitors, requiring 16 runs- to win, went in the second time and made the required number for the loss of three wickets. Appended are the scores of the first' innings :—
