Dinner to Dr. Hocken.
A number of the frionds of Dr Hocken entertained him at dinner at the Imperial Hotel last night, on the eve of his departure on a visit to America and Europe. Between 40 and 50 gentlemen sat down to dinner, which was servea by Mr Haydon in the best style. The chair was occupied by Mr George Turnbull, on his right being the guest of the evening, and on his left the Hon. Richard Oliver, M.LC. ; while Mr E. B. Cargill and Mr J. T. Wright officiated as vice-chairmen. Apologies were read from the following gentlemen: — Archdeacon Edwards, Rev. Lindsay Maokie, Messrs F. R. Chapman, W. N. Blair, R. Stout, George Cook, George Joachim, J. R. Jones, T. Xl Weldon, B. C. Haggitt, C. C. Kettle, E. P. Kenyon, Montagu Pym, G. L. Sise, W. M. Hodgkins, Geo. Oowie, James Smith, J. E. Denniston, Professor Parker, and Drs Fergusson, Drysdale, ~ Coughtrey, Roberts, and Alexander ; who, owing to absence from town and other causes, were unable to be present.— The toast of the evening was proposed by the Chairman, who expressed in appropriate terms the high appreciation entertained by those present of the many excellent qualities possessed by Dr Hocken, and their extreme regret at his approaching departure.— Dr Hookkn, in replying to the toast, expressed his most earnest thanks for the good-will entertained towards him by those present, and in a speech of some length spoke of the pleasure he derived from the knowledge that there were so many warm friends who regretted his departure from amongst them, and who would welcome him back to the Colony on hiß return.— A number of other toasts were proposed and responded to, interspersed with songs and recitations; and a most enjoyable evening was brought to a close about 11 o'clock.
