Melbourne, March 16th. The widow of Mr Bailhere, publisher, has been awarded £3092 compensation for the loss of her husband by the Jolimont railway accident. The Australian Cricketers'are passengers by the steamship Assam, leaving for Galle today., Arrived (this morning): Union Co.'s steam ship Eotomahana, from the Bluff.
March 17th. Sailed, this afternoon : Union Company's steamship Alhambra, for the Bluff. March 18th. At Windsor station, on a suburban line of railway, to-day, a train of many waggons, which was standing in the station-yard, was run into by the express train. The passengers in the latter were much shaken, and several of them suffered slight injuries. The express had a narrow escape from total wreck. The Government have now definitely decided to complete the defences of the Colony, and to reorganise the military forces; and arrange ments have been made to carry on the work with the least possible delay, Melbourne, March 20th. Arrived, this evening : P. and O. Company's steamship Clyde, with the mails which left London on February 10th. Several vessels, homeward bound to England from this port, are now reported aa considerably overdue. Mr Nathan Cohen, of Tamworth, New Sou> L h Wales, has won the first prize (an 11 roomed house) in the Bagof Private Estate Company, promoted for the disposal of the property of the late Mr C. Bagot. Melbourne, March 21st. All the patients have been discharged from the quarantine-station, and quarantine has now been closed.
Sydney, March 16th. The strike of coal-miners at Newcastle continues. The men intend to hold a mass meeting to-morrow to disouss the position of affairs, March 18th. New Zealand wheat, 5s lid ; New Zealand oats, 3s ; maize, 4s 9d. . . Sydney, March 21st. Great distress is being experienced by the miners at Mount Browne diggings, on the borders of this Colony, owing to the shortness of provisions and water. The New South Wales and South Australian Governments are now organising relief. The New South Wales Parliament has been further prorogued to 23rd May. Adelaide, March 18th, Wheat is dull at 5s 3d ,• town flour, £12 to £12 5s j country brands, £11 5s to £12 7s 6d. Brisbane, March 18th. The Custom-house officials have seized £500 worth of jewellery which has been smuggled into this port.
