University Council.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the University Council was held in the University Buildings on Tuesday afternoon. Present: The Chancellor (Rev. Dr Stuart), Dr Burns, Rev. R. L. Stanford, Messrs E. B. Cargill and J. Bathgate, M.H.R.

THE PROPOSED LOAN.

A letter was received from the Education Department, Wellington, intimating that the Government will advise his Excellency to sanction the proposed loan of £15,000, in terms of the draft sent to the Council.

It was agreed to refer the matter to the Finance Committee to take immediate action therein.

THE lATE HON. H. S. CHAPMAN.

The Chancellor said that at their last meeting a committee was appointed to prepare a minute expressing the Council's esteem of the services rendered by the late Hon. H. S. Chapman to the institution. He would read the minute which had been drafted : "That this Council record their deep sense of the loss they have sustained in the death of their esteemed colleague and former chancellor, the Hon. H. S. Chapman. Mr Chapman, who was distinguished for his learning and ability, and for his efficient discharge during many years of the duties of a judge of the Supreme Court of the Colony, accepted a seat in the Council shortly after its creation, and on the retirement of the late Sir John Richardson was elected Chancellor. In the conduct of the affairs of the University he ever took a warm interest, and he spared no pains to promote its prosperity. As Chancellor he presided over the Council wiih dignity, and at all timed gave fcho most earnest attention to the duties of the office. Hi& memory will always be revered by the members of thb Council, who enjoyed the.

fcanefit of his advice and friendship. Tho Council unite in tendering their earnest sympathy to Mrs Chapman and family in their bereavement."— lt was decided that a copy of the resolution -should be forwarded to Mrs Chapman.

THE NEW SESSION.

It was resolved to ask Professor Brown to deliver the inaugural address on the Ist of May next.
