THE ROBERT BURNS CONCERT.

A concert in aid of the Robert Burns Statue Fund was held at the Garrison Hall on Wednesday evening, and drew a crowded attendance. The entertainment consisted entirely of Scottish recitations and musical selections, and proved of an eminently creditable and satisfactory nature. Without referring in, detail to the, songs which were given, we may simply state that each seemed heartily appreciated Joy those' '■ present: Mrs Ansley's "Robin Adair,"how : ever, deserves special mention, as being probably the gem of the evening. The Binger obtained a most enthusiastic encore, and rendered' "Within a mile o' Edinboro' Toun" in response, The efforts of Misb Campbell 1 and' Messrs Fraser and Francis were 'also ' honoured with encores, and those who assisted in the part' songs may be said to have acquitted;' ' themselves most satisfactorily. Mr Denovan !t! t fairly surpassed himself in his recitation- of Burns' celebrated " Tarn 0' Shanter,'' and Mr Bracken (M.H.R.) received considerable, ap- ; plause for his "Mary in Heaven;" Mr A: J. Barth acted' as accompanist during the evening, add an orchestra; under the leadership'of Mr Parker, contributed a couple of overtures^ jT6wards the conclusion of the concert, Mr 1 Fergus, M.H.R., proposed a vote of thanks" to' those who had taken part in the 1 gerforinarice; . aild, in doing so ? expressed his conviction that the movement inaugurated for the erection of 1 a j statue to Scotland's greatest bard would' *< receive support throughout the whole Colony. Hte also intimated that it was the intention r o£ f tne .promoters of ' the movement to'' 'make arrangements for the getting up of a similar entertainment in a month's time, and the an» • nouncement was received with very' evident signs of approval. Mr G. Turnbull seconded the vote of thanks, which was, ' of course, ' accorded by acclamation. ( „ , ' '
