Wednesday evening. The past week has seen a fair amount of general business done in the import market. Prices have been very steady, and we have hardly a change to report in values. The Rising Star, the second of the lino of sailers from Liverpool, put in an appearance early last week, and her cargo of' chemicals and general grocery goods is being placed (ex ship) at fair - prices. We have also to report the arrival of the liOck Eck, from London. The bagging market continues as last reported. Candles are dull at B£d per lb for small lots. Cement is unsatisfactory to holders, and value depressed. With the Christmas demand over, dried fruits are very languid, and currantß (old) have been sold during the week at 4Jd perlb. Of fish : Salmon is a sbade firmer in consequence of an advance in America, and holders ask up to 8s 6d per dozen, although at this price we cannot as yet report much business. Sardines are held t(, **10s per dozen for halves, at which price a few B^pilots'of the' favourite brand have been quitted, 4 but to place any quantity a good concession on this would have to be accepted. Some business is passing in bops ; a parcel of fine Kents was disposed of during the week at Is lljd per lb ; ordinary brewers' lots command a. trifle more ; Tasmanians are quite out of the market, and there is little prospect of further supplies ; Californians are held for an advance in consequence of the increased cost to import. The local jam manufactory was fbrmally opened for business during the week, and expects to secure a good trade support. The quotation for the local article is about 6d per dozen lower than that for the best Tasmanian brands. Fencing wive is in 1 fair inquiry, No. S selling at £15 10s per ton, and other numbers in proportion. Oils are without change. Rice is ' dull at £14 10s per ton, in bond, for Patna, and £26 per ton, duty paid, for dressed Java, and Japan. The advance in sugars at Mauritius is confirmed, but it has not a 9 yet affected this market, beyond making a few holders less anxious to push Bales. Although the stocks are very large, the imports to date do not exceed those of last season to the came, period, but most of the cargoes arriving all about the came time had the effect of , weakening the market and giving buyers a favourable opportunity of laying in supplies. The ' consumption at' this season is very large, and the fruit being a little later than usual there is a brisk demand at present for sugar for preserving purposes. Our quotations of last week still hold good,' their range marking.the limits 1 at which most of the week's business has been done. In the grain market there is little or no change. We hear of a sale of the new' wheat at 3s 10M per bushel delivered in Ohristchurch, and probably from that to 4s will be the opening prices of the season. Oats, which lately gave Indications of an advance, have not improved, and parcels are still obtainable at our last quotation. On Monday last (says the 'Timaru Herald) Mr Mobs Jonas, on account of Mr M. Studholme, sold by auction, at Studholme Junction Saleyards, 10,000 bushels of wheat, which realised the handsome price of 4s per bushel in the railway-trucks. The different wheats offered comprised the following sorts, viz. :— Velvet chaff,' red straw, and red ohaff.
