HOME MARKETS.

Messrs Cargills, Gibbs, and Co. have received the following telegram from Messrs Hehnuth Schwartze and Co., London, dated 7th inst. : — The sales closed without further change. Prices for all merino wools equal to opening series. Prices for crossbreds id to Id higher than lowest rates of the series. The quantity held over and withdrawn from series comprises 45,0^.0 bales. Bank of England rate raised to 5 per cent. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) have received the following telegram from their London office, dated London, 7th October :—

Wool.— The sales closed this day at the level of last sales. The total quantity sold during the series was 330,000 bales ; 45,000 bales have been held over for future disposal ; 170,000 bales have been taken for export. Superior combing washed has advanced Id to ljdper lb ; superior greasy, market firmer ; medium and inferior greasy, easier; faulty and short staple merino scoured, neglected. Fine greasy and washed crossbred have advanced Jd told perlb ; coarse greasy crossbred, market Unchanged.

Mr Donald Stronacii (on behalf of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Limited) reports for the week ending 12th October : —

Cattle were again in very short supply, only 121 head being yarded, of which 10 1 werofat, the balance stores and dairy cattle. Last week's 'prices were well maintained, and considerable eagerness was shown in the biddings. Prime bullocks brought £8 15s to £13 6s, cows £7 2s 6d to £11— the top prices in each case being obtained for drafts from the l well-known Gladbrook herd. Ordinary to' good bullocks sold at £8 10b to £10 10s. We sold a draft from tho Seadown Estate at £9 17s 6d to £10 17s 6d ; and for other vendors— bullocks, £6 17s 6d to £10 15s; cows, £6 10s. Beef is worth fully 27a 6d per 1001b. . Fat Calves.— Twenty-one head came forward. We yarded and sold 17 for Messrs Samson and Little at 13s 6d to 328.

Sheep.— The supply was quite equal to the demand, but the scarcity of mutton the last few weeks kept prices firm at about equal to last quoted rates. 2705 sheep were penned, of which 1261 were merinos. Crosabreds sold at 9s 9d to 10s for shorn, to 13s 6d and 16s 6d for woolly sheep. Merinos realised 8s 6d to 13s Gd in the wool. Our sales were — for Mr J. G. Grey at 16s, Messrs Rosa Brothers 16s, and Mr W. Shand 16s 3d Mutton in the wool is worth 3d per lb; shorn, 2d per lb. 1 Lambs.- The market was again glutted, 281 being penned. Prices suffered & decline, the highest realised being 10s 3d. We disposed of 5L on account of Messrs Ross Bros., at 6a 3d to 7s ; 48 for Messrs J. and S. Wilson, at 9s 6d to 10s 3d, top price; and 48 for Mr William Shand, at 8s 6d to 9s. Pigs.- Fifty were yarded, consisting for the moßt part of good porkers, which sold up to 60s each. Store Cattle.— Yeßterday we held a sale at ihe Mosgiel yards, on account of Messrs Wilson Bros, and S. (Juartley, and cleared off all forward, 230 head, at prices ranging as follows:— For steers and bullocks, in good condition, £5 10s to £6 15s ; cows, £2 17s 6d ; young cattle, £2 15s to £4 7s 6d ; quiet dairy cows, £5 per head. Store Sheep.— We have numerousjinquiries for sheep for delivery off the shears.

Sheepskins.— At our usual Bale on Monday 3041 skins were catalogued. The attendance of the trade was good. The competition was keen for each lot, and the prices realised show a marked improvement on last rates. Butchers' green croasbreds brought 6s to 7s ; dry skins, 2s 6d to 4s 9d ; green merinos, 3s 9d to 5s lOd ; dry, 2s 3d to 3s 6d ; lambskins, Is to Is 7d ; pelts, Is each. Rabbitskins.— The quantity offered met with fair demand, and sold from Is 2jd per lb for medium sorts, to Is 5d per lb for well-saved winter pelts.

Hides. — We have no change to report in the values of hides. Prime wet-salted are stili worth 4d per lb.

Tallow.— An all-round improvement in the value of this produce may be chronicled. All forward on Monday met with ready sale at 29s 6d for well-rendered ; 23s to 26s for medium inferior sorts ; and rough fat brought 16s 6d to 19s per cwt. Grain.— Wheat : During the week very little has been received. Transactions consequently are on a limited scale. Best milling is worth 4s 4d to 4s 6d ; ordinary, 4s to 4s 3d ; inferior and fowls' feed, 2s 3d to 3s 6d per bushel. Oats have been coming to hand in considerable quantities, although prices are about the same as last week, say ;— Prime milling, 2s to 2a Id ; good bright feed, la 10d to Is lid ; inferior, Is 9d to Is lOd per bushel. The tendency of the market is decidedly downward. Barley : The demand is feeble for all sort. We sold fair samples for milling at 3s per bushel, but cannot quote transactions in other sorts.

Messrs Wright, Stbphbnson, and Co. report for the week ending 12th October as follows : —

Fat Cattle.— A short supply came to hand, only 121 head being yarded, and these all of medium quality, with the exception of the draft from Gladbrook, which was really prime. Biddings consequently were spirited, and last week's quotations were fully sustained. We sold 49 head as follows :— On account of Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. (Gladbrook Estate), 24 bullocks at from £10 2s 6d to £13 ss, and 15 spayed cows and heifers (heavy-weights) at from £8 15s to £11— average of the bullocks £11 7s, and of the cows and heifers £10 ; on account of Messrs G. E. Charlton and others, 10 head bullocks and cows, former at up to £9 6s, and the latter up to £7 ss. We quote prime boef at 27s 6d per 1001 b. Fat Calves.— Twenty-one penned, and sold at from 13s 6d to d2s.

Fat Sheep.— The market was well supplied to-day, 2705 being penned, of which 1261 were merinos, the rest crossbreds (part in the wool and part shorn). The trade's stocks having run low, there was good competition, every lot forward being: quitted at prices o.b.out equal to last week's. We sold 1474 as follows ;— On account of Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. (Gladbrook), 205 haHbred ewes at 14a, and 328 very prime merino wethers at 13s 9d ; on account of Messrs Somerville Bros, 40 crossbreds (shorn) at 9s 6d ; from Hillend Estate, 504 merino wethers at 13s ; and from the Mount Royal Estate, 398 prime crossbred wethers at las 3d. Wo quote prime mutton at 2|d to 3d per lb.

Fat Lambs.— An excessive supply came to hand, 281 being penned ; prices consequently ruled easier. Wo sold on account of W. H. Teschemaker, Esq. (Taipo Hill), 61 lambs at from 6s 6d to 7s ; and on account of Mr W. Strain, 80 lambs at from 6s to 7S 3d. Fat Pigs. - Total penned, 6,0, mostly stores. Store Cattle.— We have to report a good inquiry for well-ferown bullocks, also for young stouk. At our monthly Bale at Palmcrston on Thursday lust we disposed of 127 head mixed cattle at prices ranging from 27s for calves up to £5 5s each for two and three-year-old steers. . Store bheep.— We have buyers for every description of store sheep, for delivery off the shears. Privately during tlie week we have sold 1200 crossbred hoggets at a satisfactory price. Country Sales.— Our monthly sale at Palmerston took place on Thursday last. The quantity of horses, cattle, and sheep forward was unusually large There was a large amount of business done, 127 head of cattle changing hands at prices given above; 200 merino ewes (in lamb) at 9s ; and a considerable number of horses— unbroken draughts at up to £28 10s, and lit'ht-harncbs at as high as £55, for a well-matched pair of buggy horses. On Thursday, 20th mst., we shall hold a clearing sale at Mr W. Puddy's farm, Waikouaiti, when we shall offer a lot of draught and light-harness horses, bhorthorn bulls, steers, and heifers, pigs, Sc. Horhcs.— For heavy draughts and first-class saddle and light-harness horses the demand exceeds the supply. Last Saturday's entry consisted for tho most part of dealers' lots, a fair proportion of which changed hands at quotations. We quote first-class draughts at from £35 to £40 ; medium, £20 to £30 ; good hacks and light-harness horse 3, £14 to £20; medium, £S to £12 ; luht and inferior, £3 to £5. Sheepskins.— Our weekly sale took place on Monday last as usual. There was the usual attendance of the trade, who competed with spirit for the various lots offored. Butchers' crossbreds fetched from 5s to 6s, merinos from 4s 7d to 5s Bd, and station skins up to 4s lid. , r „, . Hides. -Values are without change. We did not offer any this week. Tallow continues in good demand. Wo quote prime mutton at up to £29 per ton ; medium, £26 to £27 10s ; rough fat, £17 to £19. Grain.— Wheat: We have no change in demand or values to report. Oats arc in limited inquiry, and prices have a downward tendoncy. Wo quote prime milling at from 2s to Is Id ; and good feed at Is lid to 2s. Barley unsaleable.

Messrs Macmsan and Co. report for the week ending 12th October as follows :—

Fat Cattle.— The moderate supply of 121 head came forward for to-day's requirements, of which about 100 head were good to prime, and the remainder fair. Owing to the limited supply last week and the short supply to-day, there was keen competition, and prices were fully in advance of last week's quotations. Prime bullocks brought from £8 15s to £13 5s ; fair to good, £6 lus to £8 10s ; cows, from £7 2s Od to £10 10s. We sold a small draft at- for bullocks, from £6 17s 6d to £9 ; and for cows, up to £8 2s Od. We quote prime beef 27s 6d per 1001b. Fat Calves.— Twenty-one were forward, and sold at from 13s Gd to 325. We sold five at quotations. Fat Sheep.— A full supyly of 2705 was penned today, consisting of 1201 merinos, and the remainder crossbreds. 'Ihe quality of about 2000 was fair to prime, and the remainder good. Prime crossbreds (in the wool) realised fiom 13s 6d to 16s 6d ; shorn, 9s 9d to 10s ; merinos (in the wool), 8s Cd to 13s 9d. We yarded and sold 730 as follows :— On account of the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, from their Clydevale Estate, a prime draft of 360 crossbred wethers (shorn) at from 9s 9d to 10s ; on account of Mr A. Douglas, 234 merinos at 12s 3d ; on account of Mr J. Wilson, Balclutha, 71 crossbreds at from 14s 6d to 15a 6d ; on account of Mr J. Macdonnell, Stirling, 34 crossbreds at 16s. We quote prime mutton (in the wool) 3d per lb ; shorn, l|d to 2d per lb. Fat Lambs.— A large supply of 281 was penned for to-day's requirements, and sold at from 6a to 103 3d. Fat Piga.— Fifty were forward, and sold at from 17s to 60s each. We sold 13 at quotations. Country Sales.— On Thursday laaf>, the 6th mat., we held a sale on account of Mr Thomas Fleminga, Kaihiku, of cattle, horses, implements, &c., when we dis* posed of same at satisfactory prices. We also held a sale on the 7th inst., at Mr M. Morrison's, Kaitangata, when we sold cattle, horses, &c. at good prises. Wool.— The following Is the latest cablegram from theHsme market, dated London, Bth :— "The wool sales closed at the level of last sales on the 7th inst. Superior combing washed has advanced Id to ljd per lb. Superior greasy : Market firmer, Medium and inferior greasy: Market easier. Fine greasy croßßbred and fine washed do have advanced Jd to Id per lb. Coarse greasy crossbred c Market unchanged. The total quantity sold during the last sales is 330,000 bales; 30,000 have been held over for future disposal ; 45,000 bales have been taken for export." In thia market, on Monday last, we sold several lots at, for inferior crossbred greasy, 9d per lb. Sheepskins.— On Monday last at our usual weekly sale we submitted a full catalogue. There was a large attendance of the trade, and tho various lota were disposed of at prices showing an advance on last week's valuei. For full-woolled butchers' crossbreds 6p 6d to 6s 7d was obtained ; medium, 4b to 5s 3d ; station '-kins, Is 9d to 2s 9d ; full-woolled merinos, 3s 8d to 6s lOd ; medium, 2s 6d to 3a 6d ; skins in bales, 7d per lb ; lambskins, 7d to Is. Hides.r-Dming the week week we have disposed of all lots on hand at up to 4d per lb for sound wetBaited.

Tallow.— The demand continues good, and 27s can be obia'ned for prime quality, and 19s for rou?h fat. Grain.— Wheat : The demand has been somewhat limited during tho week, and few transactions of any importance have taken place. We cannot, however, quote any material alteration in values as reported last week— viz., prime milling, 4s 3d to 4s 6d ; ordinary, up to 4s 3d ; fowl feed, 2a 6d to 3s 3d per bushel. Oats : There is almost no change to chronicle since last report, quotations remaining similar-say, prime milling, 2s to 2s Id ; first-class feed, Is lOd to Is lid ; inferior, Is 9d. Barley is without noticeable alteration.

These included about 25 stores and dairy cattle ; most of the balance were prime, and included a superior lot from Gladbrook. There was brisk competition for all sorts, and prices higher. Bullocks brought £7 5s to £13 10s ; cows, £4 15s to £11 ss— or equal to 25s to 27s 6d per 1001b. for prime beef. We sold mi account of Messrs Stewart, Dempsey, Walrtie, and others 17 head at quotations. Fat Calves.— Twenty-one head jarded. A few of these were good, and sold well— bebt up to 355 ; others, 13s 6d to 30s.

Fat Sheep.- To-day's market brought forward 2705, consisting of 1261 merino wethers (mostly good), and 1544 crossbreds, all good useful mutton. These included 350 of the first shorn sheep of this season. The demand was not brisk ; prices ruled about the sime as last week. Best cossbmls sold at 15s to 16s 6d ; others, 13s to 14s 9d ; best merino wethers, 12s to 13s 9d; others, Ss Cd to Us. We sold on account of Mr I). Sutherland (Milburn), 32 merino wethers, 12s ; on account of Messrs J. and J. Lumsden (Wyndham), 127 crossbreris at 13s to 14s 3d ; on account of Mr J. Crawford (Pukerau), 155 sm II merino wethers at 8s 6cl. We quote prime mutton (in wool), 2£d per lb ; shorn, l|d per lb. Fat Lambs were in fu 1 supply, 281 being petmed. These were mostly good. Best sold at da to 10a 3d ; good, 6s to 8* 3d ; others, ss. We sold on account of Mr D. Heron (Otepopo), 35 at 8a; on accou<'£ of Messrs J. and J. Sutherland (Milburn), 10 at 6s each.

Fat Piga.— Fifty yarded, chiefly store*. Best bacon pigs sold at 40s to 50s ; porkers, 26s to 38s ; stores, 12s to 21s each. We quotd pork 3sd per lb. Store Cattle.— We have disposed of some small lots during the week at full ratesStore Sheep.— We placed 3000 crossbreds delivered off the shears at a satisfactory price.

Stud Rams.— We have for sale 175 pure merino rams, two to eight-tooih, from the well-known Puketol flocks.
