KELSO TOPICS.

(FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) October 10th.

Tho weather during the past week has been very changeable — very cold winds blowing, interspersed with heavy Bhowors of rain and sleet. A few anglers have arrived from Dunedin during the week, but owing to the cold weather there has been very few fish caught. Mr David Anderson, one of our local anglers, was very successful in the beginning of the week, having landed eight trout, weighing in all about 17 pounds. Warm weather is, however, wanted, to make the fish commence sporting.

A very successful concert and ball took place in the Glenkenich Schoolhouse on Friday evening, the proceeds of which are to be divided between the School Committee and the Benevolent Institution. The school was crowded, a great many having to stand for want of room. The Tapanui " Blackbirds " performed at the concert, and each one of them performed their part in good style. Mr Myors, who acted as " Sambo," kept the house in roars of laughter. "Bones " acted with fair success, and with more practice he might greatly improve. Messrs Cummock and Hay were again to the front, and performed a double dance and song in good style. On the whole the entertainment was a great success,; and Mr Graham, schoolmaster deserves

great oredlt for the complete carrying out of the arrangements. As yet, there is no word from the Education Board about our school, and really it is too bad, seeing the number of children that are running about of school age. I think if something 1 be not done soon a public meeting should be held to com-iiler what steps should he taken in order to have the matter taken in hand at an early date.

Tacre is no word of tho telephone boing connected between tho post-office here and Tapauui ; and as it would cost very little to have it connected, I cannot see why such a del -y is being 'caused. The present telegraph line passes within 200 yards of the postoffice here, so that the expense of connection would not be great. It would be a great boon to the people in the surrounding district, if they had telegraph convenience. At present all messages have to be sent to Tapanui for transmission, which is very inconvenient. While writing about the post-olflco, I may state that it would also bo a great convenience to be able to get money -orders hero. These have also to be taken out at, and received from Tapanui, which, I believe, comes more inconvenient than the want of the telephone.

During the last week our township has been swarming with detectives and policemen on the hunt after the man Bcattie, who stabbed Robert Wilson, at Ettrick lately. It is runioui ed that Beattie is still lurking about Green vale Station, and if so he may elude the police for a long time. However, I think he would act sensibly if he would give himself up, as keeping out of sight will only make his caso worse. Besides, the wound was only a mere scratch.
