TUTURAU.
|PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) October 10th. r Tho weather for the past week has been very broken and cold, with high winds, checking vegetation, which is already somewhat behind. Mr Johnston, late teller of the jbank here, was presented on Friday evening last with a gold albort chain as a token oi the esteem he is held in by his friends on the event of his removal to Gore. * I understand that a complimentary ball is to be given by tho Mataura contingent of the Southland Hussarß in honour of Mr J. S. Shanks, captain of tho force, in reciprocation. As my dreamy "platitudes" are subject to an hypercriticism in our quiet township, it is well that I should carry no more than my fair share of responsibility. In my notes, of last week are several typographical errors, which "alter the sense of my remarks. When I undertook to write a few notes for the Witness I had no intention of treading on any one's toes'- nor had I the slightest intention or desire to enter into any controversy, secular or sacred. I have, however, very decided convictions on some questions, which I not only hold, but am prepared to defend, and believe it was on this account that exception was taken to some of my remarks It is true that a writer in a small place cannot roiuain long " under the veil," and "Christian Charity "—whom 1 am inclined to think does not live so far away us Gore— evidently knows who your correspondent id, by his allusion to a religious "water-barrel," which "Jus." says he would like to see. However, as I cannot show it, and as many of your readers will be at a loss to know what this means, I may state that I contend for immersion as a religious rite, and in doing so (although these authorities weigh nothing with me) I am supported - at least in theory - by the leaders of thought in religioua matters, from Calvin downwards.
