(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) August 15th. The much-talked'Of gift auction in aid of the Presbyterian Church funds took place, as announced, on tho 12th inst. A varied and numerous Hat of articles — including live stock of all kinds, grain, dairy produce, fancy goods, &c. was contributed by friends and supporters of the Church. A very largo concourse of purchasers attended the sale, which was presided over by Mr F. S. Canning, auctioneer. Tho sale was commenced at 3 p.m., an adjournment for refreshment wa-i made at 5 p.m., and after two hour*.' recess the business was resumed, and every article disposed of at satisfactory prices by half-past 8 The sale was conduated in the usual manner— the goods sold to the highest bidder- and the purchasers appeared satisfied. Mr Dun, in a neat speech, congratulated the auctioneer on the efficient st,> le in whioh he had performed his gratuitous services, and offered that gentleman tha hearty thanks of the Church Committee. Mr Canning, in responding, stated that it would always be a pleasure for him to assist any religious body in a similar manner, no matter to what denomination they belonged. Tho net proceeds will be about £60 at least, which sum will be a valuable addition to the funds. The church, from the effects of last Sunday's gale, was severely strained, and some trouble will bo required ere the necessary repairs are effected and the weak part strengthened. The architect will visit the building to-day and arrange to have the work properly done. The bell for the church has arrived, and was hung temporarily and rung for the first time on the eve of the gift auction. Jt weighs 1-Jcwt, and will answer the purpose very will.
