The following game was played on the 18th March la/t between the Rev. R. Fisher, formerly of the Cambridge University Chess Club, and Mr J. G. Witton :- (Two Knight's Defence). White Black. Mr J. O. The course adopted by White Is perhaps safer, and is certainly considered by many authorities quite as strong as the advance of the Kt. (6) If 4 Xt takes X P, then6PtoQ4 P takes P 6RtoKsq PtoQ4 7 B takes P Q takes B BKttoQB3 QtoKR4 9 Xt takes Xt (c) We believe that pinning the X Xt would have been better in this position. (d) This is not by any means a good move, as it completely blocks the centre to the advantage of Black. Qto Q3QR to X sq, or Kto R Bq, would have been much more to the purpose. (c) White has got his X B P forward at last, and has now gota fairly disposed game. _ (f) i Much better than exchanging Knights. This knight is powerfully posted. „„,,., . (q) An iuiudieious move, of which Black takes immediate advantage. PtoQ 83, with the object of bringing the Bishop into play, would have been far more profitable. (h) The beginning of a series of excellent moves. (i) Q to X B 2 would have relieved the pressure. (k) 32 X to B sq would not have saved the day, e.g., 32KtoBsq KttoK6ch 33 X to X sq Xt takes Kfc P eh 34 K to Bsq Ktto KB 5, &c. If— 84 Q takes Xt then— Q R to X sq eh 35 X to B «q Q to Q 8 oh 36 X to B 2 R to X 7 ch, ,&c.
