TAPANUI. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

May 9th. The school here was subjected to the inspectorial examination last week. The time chosen for the examination was unfavourable, as owing to an outbreak of measles the school attendance fell down to a minimum, and it had not yet assumed its former status. Inspector Taylor was highly pleased with the state of discipline preserved in the school. The average of passes also was very creditable. The Tapanui V.M.C.A. held their usual fortnightly meeting on Thursday. The attendance was good. Mr Christie read an original and able essay on " Culture and Character." The essay was adversely criticised, but the opinion of the members Beemed to be that a good deal more could have been written on the subject, if the essayist had appropriated the time, but that what was written was to the point. Mr Christie read a short essay|by May on the same subject, which was considered inferior to his own production. The first of a series of popular entertainments, under the auspices of the Athenaeum and School Committee, was held on Thursday evening. Through some mistake in the management the ontertainments were tartedon the same night that the Tapanui V.M.C.A. meets. " Your own " was imable to be present. This mistake will be rectified at next entertainment. lam informed that the songs, readings, and recitations given were of a first-class nature, and were well rendered, and that a most enjoyable evening was spent. The library in connection with the Tapanui Athenseum has been considerably augmented by a valuable addition of standard works, and the President is in expectation of another consignment.
