The following items are from the Western Star (Riverton) :— During the week the AthoJ miniug population has been augmented con* siderably, several new parties having set in 4 Kenneth aud party (five), from the Longwood, have made a start, and are on good paya.bid ground. There is a likelihood of a company being formed to bring in water to the Alley. Should the company be fcrmed. and sufficient water be brought in, this will one of the best goldfields in Ofcago. Mining operations at Orepuki are being energetically — and if all aocountß are true— profitably carried on at present, full advantage being taken of the plentiful supply of water. The sludge-channel by-waah is nearing completion. Tho object of this work, which has cost L2OO, is to enable the channel to be washed up, and a3 it has never been subjected to that operation, it is anticipated that the shareholders will reap a substantial harvest, Messrs Homer and party have started driving 1 in an abandoned claim recently taken up by them.
