AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND MORTGAGE COMPANY (LIMITED).

In their first annual report, adopted by the shareholders on March 16th, the directors state that after writing off a due proportion of expenditure attendant on the issue of debentures the balance available was £IS3O. Out of this sum it has not been considered advisable to declare a dividend, but £1085 has been appropriated to the payment of more than one-half 01 the preliminary expenses, and the balance, £244, has been carried forward. CROWN LANDS SALE. A number of deferred-payment sections in block IV Gimmerbiirn district, for which more than one application had been received, were submitted to auction by Mr R. B. Martin, at the Crown Lands Office, last week. The upset price was 30s per acre, and sales were effected as follows :—

Mr Donald STRONAon(on behalf of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited) reports for the week ending 11th May as follows :— Fat Cattle.— l 96 head were yarded at Burnsido today of which 20 were 6torcs and dairy cattle. The supply being a full one, last week's prices were not supported by Is Cd to 2s Cd per 1001b. Fat cattle realised as follows :-Bullocks, £6 103 to £11 7s 6d ; and cows, £4 15s to £8 12s Gd per head. Quotation, for best beef, fully 22s 6d per 1001b. Fat Calves.— Only four were yarded, which sold at 82s each. . Fat Sheep.— The supply was very large, consisting of 2743 head, of which 1211 were merinos. Prices consequently gave way about Is per head. Crossbreds fetched from 10s to 13s 3d, and merinos 3s 9d to 9s 3d. On account of Messrs J. C. Buckland, William Shand, and others, we 6old 612 head of crossbreds at from 12s 3d to 13s 3d. Quotation for prime mutton, 2Jd X)QT \\)» Fat Lambs.— Seventy-nine were forward, and realised from 9s to 10s each. Fat Pigs.— There was again a very good supply. 155 head were offered, and sold at from 5s to 38s each.

Store Cattle.— Quiet store bullocks in forward condition, fit for putting on turnips, are in demand. We have sold 100 head since last report. Store Sheep.— The demand is still considerably in excess of the supply. We report sales of 125 Leicester and 50 merino rams, on acco jnt of the New Zealand and Australian Land Company (Limited). Sheepskins.— Our catalogue on Monday consisted of about 2300 skins, which sold with fair competition at last week's rates. Butchers' crossbreds realised from 2s 7d to 4s 4d for ordinary, and 4s lOd to 5s lid for full-woolled ; merinos, Is lOd to 3s lOd ; lambskins, Is 7d to 2s lid ; pelts, lOd to Is 2d each. Hides. — We sold several parcels at auction on Monday, at from 15s 6d to 24s 6d each, for weights ranging from 431b to 631b; yearlings, calfskins, heifers, &c, in proportion. Tallow.— The market continues without any alte- 1 ration to note. We have no sales of prime tallow to report, but it would fetch 26s 6d to 275, and rough fat 16s to 178 per cwt. Grain.— Wheat : Millers showing more disposition to purchase, the tone of the market has somewhat hardened, and we are able to quote an improvement of about 2d per bushel, at which there havo been transactions. For prime milling we quote 4s per bushel ; fair to good, 3s 6d to 3s lOd ; inferior and fowl feed, 2s 6d to 3s 6d per bushel. Oats : All feed oats coming to hand are placed easily at from Is 6d to Is Bd, and milling up to Is 9d ; but really prime quality of the latter description is difficult to obtain. Barley: Prices for medium to good may be quoted at at from 2s to 3s, nominal, the inquiry being very limited. Prime malting would realise about 3s 3d per bushel, but is in very small supply. Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report for the week ending 11th May as follows :— Fat Cattle.— To-day's market was well supplied, 196 head being yarded, of which about a score were dairy cows and stores, the rest fair to good quality. Last week's quotations were not sustained, a reduction of about 2s 6d per 1001b having to be submitted to. We sold 102 head as follows :— On account of Messrs Ross Bros. (Meadowbaiik), 11 bullocks at from £7 2s 6d to £11 7s 6d, and 13 cows at from £4 17s 6d to £10 ; on account of James Shand, Esq. (Henley), nine bullocks at from £8 15s to £10 10s, and six heifers at from £6 17s 6d to £7 2s 6d ; on account of Mr Brown, 17 bullocks at from £7 7s 6d to £9 15s ; on account of Messrs Craig and Wylie (Taieri), 11 bullocks at from £6 10s to £8 6s ; on account of Mr John Draper (Tokoraairiro), 15 bullocks at from £6 to £8, and seven heifers at from £5 to £6 7s 6d ; and on account of Messrs J. J. MAuley, R. S. Howard, and others, 13 cows at from £5 5s to £9 17s 6d. We quote prime beef at 22s 6d per 1001b. Privately we have placed 25 head at quotations. Fat Sheep.— The supply was in excess of the demand, 2743 being penned. Of this number 1211 were merinos and the rest crossbreds. Prices obtained were a shade under last week's rates. We sold 1419 as follows : — On account of James Smith, Esq. (Greenfield), 544 merino ewes (small, but prime quality), at 6s 9a ; on account of Mr William Patrick, 202 crossbred ewes, at 10s ; on account of Mr Peter M'Laren (Otakia), 178 merino wethers (poor), at from 6s to 6s 3d ; on account of Messrs W. Gellibrand and Co., 114 merinos (inferior), at 3s 9d ; on account of Mr W. Livingston (Waitahuna), 120 crossbred wethers, at from lls 6d to 12s ; on account of Mr John Michael (Lawrence), 100 crossbred wethers (prime), at 12s 9d ; on account of Messrs Draper and Johnstone (Tokomairiro), 91 merino wethers (prime), at from 8s 6d to 9s 3d ; on account of Mr Joseph Parker (Tokomairiro), 37 crossbred ewes, at 10s ; and on account Mr James Inglis, 33 prime crossbred wethers, at 13s, We quote prime mutton at barely 2|d per lb, Fat Lambs.— Seventy-nine penned. We sold 42 at from 9s to 9s 6d. Fat Pigs.— lss penned. Our sales consisted of 108, at from 5s to 38s each. We quote pork at a shade under 3d per lb. Store Cattle. —We have buyers for steers suitable for turnip feeding. There are not, however, many offering. Store Sheep.— We have no sales to report. Country Sales.— Our monthly sale at Palmerston took place on Thursday last, when we disposed of a number of store merino ewes, young cattle, &c. at satisfactory prices. On the day following (Friday), at Blueskin, we held a clearing salo of draught horses, dairy cattle, &c. on account of Messrs Downes and Pullar. There was a good attendance of buyers, and prices ranged as follow :— Heavy draught mares and geldings fetched from £21 to £41 ; draught foals, from £9 to £11 10d ; light-harness horses, from £10 10s to £16 10s ; dairy cows, at from £5 5s to £7 ss ; farming implements and dairy utensils at full rates. On Tuesday last, at St. Kilda, on account of Mr Robert Goodibson, we held a displenishing sale of draught and light-harness horses, dairy cattle, &c. A large number of animals changed hands as follows :— Draught horses, from £20 to £28 ; light-harness horses, £9 to £13 10s ; dairy cows, from £5 12s 6d to £12 ss. We beg to call attention to our sale at Mr George Wallace's (Green Island), on Tuesday, 17th inst., when, owing to his leaving the district, we shall sell his live stock, household furniture, &c. Horses.— There is a fair demand for strong upstanding coach and light-harness horses. On Saturday last we sold on account of Mr T. Hodgson (Papanui), a draft of 15 light-harness horses, at from £10 to £22 10s, averaging £14 5s per head. A large number of other horses also changed hands. We quote first-class draughts at from £30 to £40 ; medium, £18 to £25 ; good hacks and light-harness horses, £16 to £25 ; light and inferior, £3 to £8. Sheepskins.— Our weekly sale took place on Monday last as usual. There was a good attendance of the trade, and good prices were realised for the various lots offered. Butchers' erossbreds fetched from 3s 3d to 4s 8d ; merinos, 2s 7d to 3s Id ; and lambskins from 2s 4d to 3s sd ; station skins at up to 5s 3d. Hides. — At auction on Monday last we disposed of 236 hides as follows :— baited heavy weights, in good condition, at 4|cl per lb ; light, 4d to 4§d ; damaged, 2d to 3d per lb ; dry hides, from 3s to 12s per hide. Tallow.— We did not offer any this week. Grain.— The demand for choice samples of milling wheat still continues, and prices at our quotations are firm. We 'quote extra prime milling at 3a lid to 4s per bushel ; ordinary to good, 3s 7d to 3s 9d ; inferior and fowls feed, 2s 3d to 3s. Our sales for the •week consist of 18,100 bushels. Oats : There exists a fair inquiry for export and also for local use. We quote prime milling at Is 9d per bushel ; good heavy feed (bright), Is 7^d to Is 8d ; ordinary feed, Is 7d. Barley : No transactions. Messrs Maclean and Co. report for the week ending 11th May as follows :— Fat Cattle.— A fair supply came forward for to-day's market, 196 head being yarded, including 20 store cattle and dairy cows. Three-fourths of same were of ordinary quality, and the remainder good to prime. Notwithstanding the small number forward last week and tne usual supply to-day, prices receded by 2s Cd per 1001b. Bullocks brought fiom £5 10s to £11 7s Cd ; cows, £4 15s to £9 17s 6d. We yarded 101 head, and sold them at the following rates :— On account of Mr B. Thomson, 18 head, at from £G 5s to £8 17s 6d ; on account of Mr J. Brown, 12 head, at from £6 10s to £8 15s ; on account of Messrs Bryce Brothers, 14 head, at from £5 5s to £11 ; en account of Mr J. Murray, 5 head, at from £5 to £7 10s ; and on account of various other vendois, 7 head, at from £5 10s to £9 17s Cd ; and turned out 26 head. We quote panic beef 22s Od per 1001b. At the Mosgiel yards to-morrow (Thursday), we shall offer 40 head really prime fat cattle, medium weights. Fat Calves.— Four were yarded. We sold three at from 26s to 325. Store Sheep.— We held a sale of merinos and crossbreds at Kelso on Friday last, when we sold 2500 at— for crossbred ewes, full-mouthed, Ss 6d to 9s Id, and for merino do, six and eight-tooth, up to 7s 7d ; full and broken-mouthed merino do, at 4s 6d ; do wethers, full and broken-mouthed, 5s 3d to 5s 9d. Country Sales.— We beg to call attention to clearing salo of Clydesdale horses, drays, harness, ploughs, &c, at Kelso, on Thursday, the 26th mst. Property Sales.— We have to report the sale of that very desirable farm on Inch-Clutha, consisting of 140 acres rich alluvial land, the property of Mr James Willocks, to Mr James Gall, of Dunedin, at a satisfactory figure. The Lee Stream Hotel and lands, offered by us on 10th inst., was withdrawn, but is now for sale by private treaty. Wool.— Catalogues to hand by the San Francisco mail confirm the decline in prices previously advised by cablegram. The fall is more especially noticeable in tho case of rough crossbred and three-quarter-bred. The advices of the opening of the present series may be expected on Friday. Sheepskin«.— At our sale on Monday last we disposed of a moderate catalogue at satisfactory prices. Butchers' crossbreds realised from 3s 8d to 4s 3d ; merinos (ordinary), 2s 8d to 3s 4cl ; lambskins, 3s lOd. Hides continue in demand at prices recently quoted. Tallow.— We have no sales to report. Grain.— Wheat : The demand for good samples continues, and we have made sales at 4s per bushel for choice lots of milling ; ordinary, 3s 7d to 3s 9d ; fowl feed, 2s 6d to 3s 3d. Fat Calves.— Four yarded, and sold at full rates. Fat Sheep.— 2743 penned, consisting of 1211 merinos of middling quality, and 1532 crossbreds, mostly prime. Hides.— At our sale on Monday we disposed of lots to hand at full rates— viz., for sound-salted, GOlb and upwards, sd ; 50 to 601b, at 4|d; green hides, to 25s 6d. Tallow.— We sold a few odd lots up to 25s 6d for mixed; butchers' rough fat, 15s 6d to 16s Cd per cwt. Grain.— Wheat : There is still good demand for prime milling sorts. Velvet and Tuscan are much wanted. Prices, however, are unaltered. Inferior quality and fowl feed in plentiful supply, though dull of sale. Oats : During the week the arrivals have been large, but bright samples aro still scarce, and for any such lots the price has hardened. Inferior lots are slow of sale. Barley remains a drug on the market. We quote prime milling wheat, 3s 9d to 3s lOJd ; extra choice, 3s lid ; medium, 3s 4d to 3s 8d ; inferior and fowl feed, 2s to 3s Id.
