CHESS NOTES. Detroit.— The fifth problem tourney in connection with the Free Press Chess Column is over, the Judge (Mr G. E. Carpenter) awarding the prizes as follows — Best 4-mover, Mons. E. Pradignat (France) ; best 3mover, Dr S. Gold (Vienna) ; best 2-mover, Mr J. C. J. Wainwright (Massachusetts). The latter also gained the special prize for the best 2'er by an American composer other than the prize 2-mover, and the firstnamed received the special prize for the best 2'er by a foreigner other than the prize 2-mover. There were 35 competitors who contributed 99 positions. The positions were nearly all of a very high order or merit. Canada.— Mr C. S. Baker, on the occasion of his re- ■ tirement from the Chess Editorship of the Canadian Spectator, was presented on New Year's Eve with a purse containing the deeds of a valuably lot of .real estate contributed by members of the Montreal Che?s Club and the staff of the paper as a recognition of his services and endeavours on behalf of chess. — Adelaide Observer.
