GORE.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

J April llth. The frame of the Presbyterian church is already erected. This prompt beginning bids fair to see the building completed within the contract time. Not before it is wanted, as nearly the whole revenue of the church is now required to defray the cost of renting the present hall. It is expected that a large influx of new settlers, who have purchased farms on the Company's estate, will take place ere the winter sets in. This will add very materially to the prosperity of this district. The number on the school roll is higher now than ever it has been, and daily increase is being made. The Committee, I am informed, feel themselves in an awkward position for the want of sufficient funds wherewith to erect shelter and coal-sheds, the Board having only granted £15, which sum is totally inadequate for the purpose mentioned. Here, I consider, sonic modification of the present Education Act might with advantage be made— i.e., committees should have power to levy a small rate on parents for the purpose of defraying the cost of such works as are necessary in connection with schools under their charge.

111 1 should have mentioned at the opening of this letter that the Gore flour mill has again fallen into the hands of its old proprietors, Messrs Richardson, Green, and Co A quantity of grain is still in stook, and the weather is simply execrable for harvest work. Unless a change takes place soon, I am afraid that the outstanding crops will be injured.
