Tanner, the Faster, Going to England.
The New York papers of the 10th October say:— Dr Tanner said to-day: 'I am making arrangements with Dr W. B. Richardson, of London, to fast there. Dr Richardson has gained considerable reputation on account of the stand he has made against the use of aloohol as a medicine. I have told him that I would do the 40 days' fast again in London, and he is to issue a challenge to the brewers, distillers, and doctors. They may select six men, as near my age and physical condition as possible. They can take wine, beer, or any spirituous liquor daring the fast, and I will take water only, and we'll see what the results will be. I am sure they can't stand it, and the reason is plain. When I fasted I lived on myself ; on the decomposition of my tissues. I lost half a pound- a day in tissues. It was as nourishing to me as half a pound of any other animal tissue. Now, as I said, aloohol chesks decomposition of tissue. Suppose I'd taken aloohol into my system daring my fast? It would have stopped my supply of nonrjtehment and, I'd have otarved fo death,'
