Wheat transactions have been few, and at recent rates. There is a slight lull in the market, though prices are in no way effected. First-class milling is quoted at 4s Id to 4s 2d, and fair quality 3s lOd to 4s. Oats : The inquiry for milling samples is a shade easier, in the face of the most recent bnglish telegraphic advices Samples answering to this description find buyers at Is 7d to la Bd. The latter figure, however, may be looked upon as the top price at this moment, and it is only obtainable for oats of good bright quality. Barley: The market is without alteration, and little business can be reported. Flour : Millers report a good demand at late rates. Grass seed has been selling more freely, though prices are unaltered. Ryegrass, 2s 6d to 2s 7d for best lots, and inferior ranges from 2s upwa ds. The season is now getting late, and buyers are less anxiou3 to purChase. The stock market was fully supplied this week, and biddings were not very brisk. Mr Donald Stronacii (on behalf of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited), reports for the week ending 22nd September as follows :—: — Fat Cattle.— Only 102 head were forward to-day at Burnside, for which there was a fair demand, at somewhat over last week's prices. Bullocks fetched from £6 7s 6d to £13 2s 6d per head, and cows from £6 2s 6d to £9. We sold on account of Mr William Shand 20 head of bullock 9, at £6 7s 6d to £9 2s 6d, and cows at £6 2s 6d to £7 per head. Quotation for prime beef, 26sto27s6dperlOQlb. ' Fat Sheep.— The market was well supplied with

2435 head, 1895 of which were crossbreds and 540 merinos. For the former 13s to 17s 6"d per head was obtained, and for the latter lls to lls 3d— or about equal to last week's values. We sold on account of Mr J. G. Grey 155 head of crossbreds, at 10s 6d to 17s 6d ; and on account of Messrs Fraser and M'Lean, 155 merinos, at lls per head. We quote prime mutton 2sd to 3d per lb.

Fat Lambs.— Ninety-four were sold, at from 6s to 10s 9d. We disposed of a small draft, on account of Mr J. G. Grey, at 10s per head. Fat Pigs.— Sixty-seven were cleared, at from 14s to 59s each.

Wool.— The improvement already reported in the tone of the London wool auctions appears to be well maintained. There is a fair local demand at good prices. On Monday we sold a few small lots of scoured combing at from 151 dto 18d, and of greasy crossbred at 9d to 9}d per lb. Sheepskins.— We offered a large catalogue on Monday at our weekly sale. Competition was scarcely up to that of the previous week, and in consequence prices were not well supported. Butchers' crossbred skins realised from 2s 9d to 5s Sd, and merinos 3s 4d to 4s Sd each ; station skins sold up to 4s 7d. Hides remain unchanged from last week's prices, at \vhich the demand is good. Tallow.— Well-rendered tallow may be quoted up to 27s per cwt., and rough fat up to 17s, at which we have cleared all parcels offering. Grain. — Wheat : Not much is doing, millers being pretty well supplied, and, with the decline in the Home markets and large stocks in Austialia, anticipating a decline, are indisposed to purchase. We quote 4s 6d for prime milling, 3s 6d to 4s for medium. Oats : There is some inquiry, but as holders appear unwilling to relax their limits, very little business has transpired. We quote Is Sd for prime milling, and Is 5d to Is 7d for feed. Barley : There is nothing fresh to report. At our quotation of 0s 6d for prime malting there are buyers, but there is very little of such quality in the market. Medium is difficult to place, even at our last week's quotations of 2s 8d to 3s 3d.

Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report for the week ending 22nd September as follows :—

Fat Cattle.— The number forward to-day (102 head), although small, proved quite equal to the requirements of the trade, most of the butchers having large stocks on hand from last week's market. Prices consequently showed no improvement on last week's quotations. We sold, on account of Messrs W. Gellibrand and Co. (Cottesbrook), 30 bullocks and heifers, at from £S 5s to £11 12s 6d for former, and from £6 2s 6d to £9 for latter ; on account of Mr Geo. Cockerill and others, 12 bullocks and cows, at up to £11 for the former, and up to £6 for the latter. We quote prime beef at 25s per 1001b. On Friday, 24th inst. , at Totara, near Oamaru, in conjunction with Maclean and Co.,we shall offer for sale on account of the N. Fat Sheep. — The market was fully supplied to-day, 2435 baing penned, consisting of 1895 crossbreds and 540 merinos, from fair to good quality. Bidding was not very brisk. AH, however, with the exception of one or two lots in second hands which were turned out, found purchasers at slightly under last week's quotations. We sold 1282 crossbreds as follows :— On account of James Smith, Esq., (Greenfield), 482 crossbreds (small), at 13s ; on account of Mr William Dallas, 33 crossbreds at 16s 6d ; on account of Mr William Patrick, 262 crossbreds, at from 13s to 15s 6d ; on account of Mr James Gall, 505 crossbreds, at from 13s to 14s 6d each. Fat Pigs.— Sixty-seven bacon and porker pigs came forward, which we sold on account of Messrs J. Irvine and E. Lee at from 27s to 59s each.

Store Cattle.— We have one or two lots for sale, but at present have no transactions to report. Store Sheep. — We have no sales to report. Station Properties.— On Monday, the 20th instant, we offered by auction at our wool stores Messrs Smith and Pogson's interest in the lease of Barewood Station expiring 31st December next, with all the sheep depasturing thereon, numbering about 17,600 of mixed sexes, in wool. There was a very large atteudance of buyers and others interested in pastoral pursuits, but biddings were slow, and the price offered not reaching the owners' estimate of value, the property had to be withdrawn. Subsequently, however, we sold it privately, at the rate of 12s 3d per head for the sheep, the buyers being the New Zealand Agricultural Company (Limited). We also offered the freehold on the station, consisting of about 103 acres, with improvements erected thereon, but had to pas 3it in. Country Sales.— On Saturday, 25th inst., at Mackay's yards, near Oamaru, we shall offer for sale, on account of Edward Menlove, Esq. (Windsor Park), 50 well-bred cows, in calf to pure shorthorn bulls. Pure-bred Stock.— We beg to report having sold, on account of the New Zealand and Australian Land Co. (Clydevale Estate), to Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. (Gladbrook Estate), the pure shorthorn bull Good Templar, bred by his Grace the Duke of Northumberland, sire Mayor of Windsor (31897), &c, dam Marion by Vanguard (23115), &c. ; also, 20 pure shorthorn heifers, two years old, by Hercules (imp.), bred by Mr Aylmer, Weat Dereham Abbey, Norfolk, out of Butterfly cows ; also, on account of same vendors, to Mr Watson Shennan, of Conical Hills,6o three-quarter-bred shorthorn heifers, two years old, by Good Templar (imported), and Butterfly bulls, all at satisfactory prices.

Horses. — Heavy draughts and upstanding light-har-ness horses are in limited demand. On Saturday last a considerable number came forward for our sale, a fair proportion of which changed hands at quotations. We quote first-class draughts at from £35 to £45 ; medium, £20 to £30 ; good hacks and light-harness horses, £17 to £25; light and inferior, £3 to £8. Sheepskins.— Our weekly sale took place on Monday last. There was a good attendance of the trade, and fair competition for each lot offered. Prices, however, were scarcely equal to last week's quotations. We catalogued about 1600 skins, which sold as follows :— Butchers' crossbreds fetched from 4s 8d to 5s 7d • merinos, from 4s 5d to ss ; station skins, from Is 4d to 3s lid.

Hides are at present in active demand, and recent quotations are well sustained. During the week we have placed 170 at 3Jd for wet-salted, and 20a for butchers' green hides.

Tallow. — We did not offer any this week. Grain. — Wheat : Prime samples are in demand, and are saleable at from 4s 6d to 4s Sd per bushel; ordinary, 4s 2d to 4s 5d ; fowl's wheat, 2s 6d to 3d. Fat Cattle.— A small supply of 102 head came forward for this day's market, the quality of which was principally good to prime, 20 being stores. The demand was fairly good, but owing to the trade having stocks on hand from last week's full market, prices, on the whole, showed only a slight improvement on late quotations. Bullocks brought from £8 17s 6d to £13 2s 6d ; cows, £5 15s to £7 17s 6d. We quote prime beef from 25s to 27s 6d ; medium 22s 6d. '

The draught colt Prince Imperial was passed in, and is now for private sale. At the wool sales to-day 9700 bales were offered, making a total of 238,500 catalogued since the opening. The tone of the sale continues good."
