NOTES AND QUERIES.

Kaikorai.— The City of Boston sailed from New York for Liverpool on the 11th February, 1870. At the end of that year a board was found on the coast of Cornwall stating that the vessel was sinking. Reader, Clutha, writes : —A few sheep were put on rough pasture for a week when we noticed two or three of them ill. They went blind, took fits, and would not eat. After they were taken back to their green pasture no more have been ill.— These are all tho symptoms of tutu poisoning. If not too far gone, bleeding the ear is a safeguard ; but there is no certain cure. It is well to remove tho stock out of the reach of the plaoi Constant Reader, the Flat.— One acre fair-grassed ground will carry one cow, or four sheep, or one ordinary horse, if well laid down with artificial grasses, clover, &c. ; but if it is only medium natural-grassed country, it will only carry from half to quarter of the above. Another Constant Reader asks whether the eggs in the Vestris paste, a receipt for which was given in the " Ladies' Column " a few weeks ago, are to be be beaten before boiled ; second, the (|uantity of rosewater required ; and lastly, if the alum and the oil of sweet almonds are to be boiled with it. — The whites of the eggs are dropped into the rosewater while the latter is at boiling point, in the same manner as poached eggs are dropped into the hot water; sufficient rosewater (which is only substituted for ordinary water to give an agreeable odour to the paste) to cover the eggs will do. The other ingredients are not boiled, but are pounded up with the eggs after the latter are taken out of the

resewater. J. D., Snowy Mountains.— ln reference to your re quest for t a cure for ringworm, E. C, Oamaru, i kindly forwards the following : — Procure a bottle of Morton's Pricalli, and apply the liquid therein contained twice or thrice a day, and it effectually kills it. I have proved this remedy to be infallible with my own children and others, therefore give the public the benefit of the same receipt. Alpha. —We would advise you to consult a solicitor, as it is impossible for us to do more than give you a general opinion, and we would not advise you as to what course should be adopted in the circumstances. When one is sailing very close to the wind, the slightest deviation might prove disastrous. As to your questions, we reply :— lst. We do not think the creditors could seizo merely on the ground of the son being under age ; but we think the sale to the creditor in payment of his debt could be upset altogether, and the former made bankrupt. 2nd. 1 We do not think there is anything to prevent that. 3rd. Yes. 4th. Can't suggest any. sth. Yes. 6th. File a declaration of insolvency. 7th. The land could be sold subject to the mortgage— i.e., tho equity of redemption could be sold. Jf C. 8., Waihola, writes :— At a Road Board meeting a motion was put ; four voting for the motion, the chairman declares there are four for the motion, but does not vote himself ; then four members vote against the motion, and demand that the chairman vote with them, he not having given his deliberate vote for the motion. But the chairman ruled that that he could give both his casting and deliberative after the votes of the members had been taken.— The ruling was not correct. Having declared the result of the voting without having exercised his his own vote as a member, he could then only give his casting vote as chairman. William Lyons, Greenstone, Lake Wakatipu.— Before you can impound under the Impounding Ordinance, your land must be securely fenced, but you can recover damages for the trespass although the land is not fenced at all. Every man is bound to keep his cattle from trespassing on his neighbour's land, whether it is fenced or not. M. M. wishes a receipt for frosting for cake. Beat two pounds of refined sugar with two ounces of fine starch, sift the whole through a gauze sieve, then beat the whites of five eggs with a knife upon a pewter dish for half an hour, beat in the sugar (a littlo at a time, or it will make the eggs fall and spoil the colour), and when all the sugar has been put in, beat it half an hour longer. If put on as soon as the cake comes out of the oven it will harden by the time the cake is cold. Smaller quantities to be mado with similar proportions of material. A. 8., Duuedin, asks for information as to how many persons have been executed, and subsequently found innocent, since 1810 in Great Britain and Ireland. — Several cases may be instanced : the Habrons case ; Whalley Range murder, Manchester; Edmund Galley, Devonshire murder; Penge murders, near London ; case of Alice Rhodes. Had these persons been executed instead of being sentenced to transportation, they would have been unjustly hanged, having since been found innocent of murder. There have also been ? everal cases in * Ireland but we have no record available. Further particulars will appear next week.
