LAWRENCE.
. (fIBOK OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT ) August 23rd. Tha remains of the late Mr Ireland, M.H.K., were accompanied from the rail, ■way station to the town boundary by the Mayor wad, councillors and a largo number of citizens. The deceased gentleman was ■w\-ll known and highly esteemed'in Lawrence, and tho news of his death cast quite a gloom ov«r tbe community. ft Bpeaks well for the interest we of Lwrence take in the oauso of education to sjie another school in our midst. Besides the public achool, which is, of couesis, well atseeded, we have St. Patriok'a School, with an attendance of upwards of a hundred, and n ladies' school, where a knowledge of the languages, music, and modern acoomplishmeatsare imparted. Mi»s Horan has been offered sufficient inducement to open another private school on a less expensive scale .than the former, and she is having the oarpenta'rfl' shop lately oocupied by Mr Collins fitted up for that, purpose. We have also two musio teachers here, so that if our young people are not well taught it is not for the want of facilities. We are enjoying delightful weather. The ploughraenard all bu»y. There aro a number of men idle here now owing to the county works being almost completed. About a dozen are engaged finishing off the road *t Tuapeka West. The road to the antimony reef will be proceeded with directly, but it will not be a heavy undertaking. A few men are fossicking about the old diggings. Tuapeka Flat, whioh baa been worked and abandoned by Europeans and Chinese, is ajjain being turned over. Last month's yield of gold from the Wethersfcones Geinent Company waa 150oz. ThU' Lawrence Brass Band, which, under the leadership of Mr Graham, a new arrival here, in becoming very proficient, gives an entertainment to night. They are sure to have a crowded house. The programme is published, snd tho names figuring thereon can always command a good audience. Amateurs, aa a rule, are more successful here in this respect than professionals.
