The factor of the Church Trustees has been informed by telegraph that the Professor of English Literature and Political Economy has been appointed. Negotiations are said to be on the eve of completion Jfor the purchase of the Newton Kirk (Auckland) and the manse adjoining for L 15,000, by the Eoman Catholics, for Father Sullivan and other Benedictine priests expected to arrive shortly. Referring to the Benedictine priests for whose accommodation negotiations have been opened for the purchase of Dr WalhV church and manse, the Auckland Catholic organ, the " Freeman's Journal," says :— " Intelligence has reached Auckland that on the 19 th July the Very Rev. Father Adelbert Sullivan, 0.5.8., accompanied by Father Lack, 0.5.8., left Brindisi for Auckland. On arrival at Adelaide they will be joined by Lord Abbotte Alcock, 0.5.8., Father Fox, 0.5.8., and several lay brothers. The party may be expected in Auckland by the middle of September." We regret to learn that the Rev. Mr Russell, of the Cavereham Presbyterian Churoh, has been compelled through failing health to give up his work. He left on Tuesday for Scotland, via Sydney, accompanied by his wife and family. Mr Alfred Brunton lectured on " The future division of the land of Israel" to about 200 persons at the Temperance Hall on Monday eveniog. The lecturer made his remarks the more interesting by the exhibition of several wellexecuted diagrams. The Rev. L. On Sunday evening there wag a crowded attendance in the Queen's Theatre, when Mr M. W. Green lectured on "Christianity Selfdemonstrated." Mr J. A.
