Alex Kidd, Wyndhain,.eays :— l4B3, splendid ; 86, very Kood ; 88, 87, good; 88, very simple ; 90. very good; the rest all good fair riddles. I wis pleased to soe A. G Nicol giving selectors a few worls. I would join him in advocating tho causo of originality. 1493, (Kirk wall) if this is th« answer, D M'K is ia en or, as Kirkwall is chief town in tha Orkney Islamic A HBRRAHD, Wint;.n, writeß : In jour issue of 24th, Bella, Peninsula, asks, " Whether It was the question or answer of 1416 1 had seen before, and where. 5 1
have Been both, either In the Witness or FamilyHerald lam not sure; but the question was a Httlo differently put in either; but as I have apparently trodden on delicate ground I sincerely ask your correspondent's pardon. W G Coster, says: —1486,1 can Bolye all but one word, wh'ch I am not very sure about; 1487, passable ; 1488, good ; 1490, easy ; 1491, eitremely simple; 1492, easily solved. IM O, Clyde, says :—ll A E Hardy will look in a copy of Witness of 10th July, he will find answer to puzz'e 1402 sent by me. A G Nicoii, Grey mouth, writes: -Having a little spare time on my hands this evening, I forward four charades, the one word of two syllables solves tho four. Ido so for the purpose of throwing oil oa the troubled waters of dispute th«t exists between Mr Gerrard and your lady correspondent Bella, a»d to show riddler solvers that plagiarism does not exist in the answer to a charade, as charade composers may make up one on a word th'it may have appeared in some publication previously, and it is quite possible that they m»y use words in the charade that other composers had used in a charade on the same word, and never saw the same charade before, in any shape or form. I never saw a charade on the word that I forward—some of your riddler solvers may have. It is when a charada appears clothed in the same identical words tbat it appeared in print before that requires the comment brush applied to it.
