The Silver Cup, presented by Meßsrs Elder, Smith, and Co. in 1873, for , ' the best five oombing merino ewes, i 2 tooth or under. Also a great number of first, second, and third prizes for rams, and also for ewes. The medal of the great Exhibition in London in 1862 was awarded to Mr John Murray for fineness of quality and Bi'ze of ram's fleeces ; as was also the gold medal of the South Australian Agricultural Society, presented by his Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh for combing merino wool; and also the special prize cups of the South Australian Agricultural Society for oomb ng merino wool shorn in the years 1870 and 1871, besides that for the wool taken from grass-fed sheep in 1872 ; and also the first prize for fleeces shorn in 1873, 1874, 1875. 1876, 1877, 1878 ; and at the great Philadelphia International Exhibition in 1876 the medal, diploma, and report for six fleeces of choioe selection of oombing merino wool, of long staple and excellent quality, fleeces weighing over 151b. ' The six magnificent prize fleeces exhibited by' Mr John Murray at the Shows oi the last six years, though of less than 12 months' growth, averaged over 151b per fleeoe, and his exhibits frequently go to greater weights, the cix fleeces shown in 1876 average weighing over 161b Boz, and have ranged up to 221b for a single fleece of pure clean wool. It ia worthy of note that all these' ptizeß have been taken with (or from) sheep grazed on native pastures only, though they have many times competed against German, Frenoh, and Colonial-bred sheep, some of which have been artificially .fed and housed.
