ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Council of the Otago Acclimatisation Society was held on Friday, the 21st inst., in the Government Buildings, Princes street, Dunedin Present : Messrs J. P. Maitland (in the chair), A. C. Bcgg, P. F- Stoddart, W. Arthur, hon. sec., andF Deans, curator. The minutes of the previous meeting (annual) were read and confirmed. FISH, BIRDS, ETC., The Secretary read the following report by Mr Deans, curator :— "Trout.— l begto lay before you the operations of the Acclimatisation Society since the Twinning of the present year. There have been 14,000 vouii"- trout liberated in the following streams :— Water-of-Leith,lsoo; Waitati,2ooo; Waitahuna, 1500; Waipahi, 1500 ; Waikouaiti, 2200 ; Tuapeka, 1000 ; Tokomairiro (south branch), 300 ; Pomahaka, 500 ; Waikaka, 600; Falconer's Creek (Tuapeka), 100; Mr Beattie, Kaitangata, 100; sent to Stewarts Island, 1300 I rcrct to say that owing to a mishap but few (some dozens) of the last-mentioned lot reached their destination. Perch.-Of perch there have been distributed 550 as follows:— To Mr Smaill, Kaitangata, 40' the reservoirs at Lawrence, 100; Chnstchurch Acclimatisation Society, 150 ; Clydevalc (pond), CO ; lagoons at East Gore, 200. Starlings.— About 490 starlings have bcon liberated in different localities— viz Hawke's Bay (Hastings), 307; Croydon Bush (Gore) CO; to Mr Ellis, Mcrrivalc, Otautau, 122. Blackbirds, &c— There were four blackbirds and 10 hedge sparrows also sent with the starlings to llawkc's Bay. About 80 Australian minas were purchased from Mr R. Bills, iun and liberated in the Goodwood Bush, Goodwood Estate. I may also mention that a fence has been erected round ouv store pond, and Mr M'Gruer has kindly olfcred to plant the exterior with trees, so as to preclude the fence from view." ;» NKW BREBDINO-r-ON'DS. It was also reported that it was found practicable, at a cost of about £200, to bring in water from Opoho Creek to site for new ponds near Mr Deans, the curator's housc-a small quantity only being required. Further consideration of this was deferral, in order that the consent of the various proprietors through whose ground the pipe-track would pass, miuht bo secured— Mr Deans to report to an adjourned meeting on Tuesday next, the 25th iiibt. Some accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned. Getting out of a difficulty.— Customer : "Dear me, Mr Puddifoot. why, your fourpeuny pork pips i»o but a very little larger than those at twopence !" Puddifoofc : " That s quite true, and I often hear the same remark. I Bee how it in, 1 stmll have to make them twopenny pica smaller."
